I need help picking a song again, and I'm totally stumped, so of course I come to Inforoo.
I'm making a sort of tribute video about someone who passed away recently. He was a hockey player (the video is mostly just a slideshow of hockey pics) and he was only 29.
I don't necessarily want a super sad song, it doesn't need to be a song that's specifically about death (although it could). It seems like there must be a ton of songs out there that various musicians have written as tributes to friends or family who passed away, I just don't know 'em! The few songs I could think of didn't really work for this (usually due to specific references that only worked for the person the song was actually about).
So....give me any ideas you can think of as far as good memorial/tribute/remembrance/etc songs!
Well, if you are looking for something upbeat and hockey related to go along with clips, Great Big Sea has a song called "Helmethead" but it's definitely not ideal for a crowd in deep mourning.
Hallelujah is a good mourning song. I prefer the Jeff Buckley version.
In My Life, either the Beatles version or the Johnny Cash Version. Also, Cash's versions of We'll Meet Again or Bird On A Wire.
Do You Realize by the Flaming Lips might work our it might be a little too brutal.
My personal favorite song that is on my funeral list is Keg On My Coffin by the Pushstars. Here's a version by singer Chris Trapper solo:

I thought of "In My Life" but it's a bit too personal for this, I think. I'm finding that to be a problem with a lot of the songs I find. Thought about "Do You Realize" too - still haven't totally decided against that, but like you said it may be a bit blunt. Same goes for "Keg On My Coffin" I think although it sounds like a really nice song. Those Johnny Cash songs might be possibilities, though.
Two songs from the Grateful Dead always come to mind - "Brokedown Palace", which is for Jerry's mother, and "Box of Rain", which is kind of for Phil's father. Not really that personal, I think they could work. "Brokedown Palace"
"Box of Rain"
(Obviously the studio versions of these songs, from American Beauty, are the ones you want)
Also, "Bird Song" which they wrote for Janis (maybe the version from Reckoning):
