Anybody catching one of these shows? It's a great lineup. I'm going to the Beacon this thursday in NYC.
Old Crow Medicine Show , Dave Rawlings Machine featuring Gillian Welch , The Felice Brothers and Justin Townes Earle will join forces this summer for an outing dubbed "The Big Surprise Tour." Each stop on the trek--which launches Aug. 4 in Hampton Beach, NH, and is scheduled to hit a total of nine cities by mid-month (details below)--will feature two 90-minute sets broken up by an intermission.
"In a free form ramshackle flow, the bands and artists will share the stage, taking part in each other's songs, resurrecting old standards, and playing newly written collaborative material as they go," organizers said in a press release.
"Seven years ago, when Old Crow first met Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch at the Station Inn in Nashville, we stayed up till dawn singing Stan Rogers songs and playing AC/DC licks," Old Crow's Ketch Secor said in a prepared statement. "Three weeks later, we were making a record. They were that rusted sign at the fork in the road showing OCMS just where it was headed."
I'm going to the Route 29 Revue which is OCMS,Levon Helm,Grace Potter,Iron and Wine,The Felice Brothers and Justin Jones.
While I think that Big Suprise tour looks awesome, Levon & Grace FTW.
I agree....I wish that I could attend this one. It's too far away for me to drive back at night but it's still an awesome lineup. I wish Levon and Iron & Wine were going to the show i'm going to tonight.

what an amazing show last night.
really cool
members of all the bands coming and going at all times to join in on songs was great.
show began with EVERYONE on stage playing the Felice Brothers song "The Big Surprise" (the theme of the tour I guess).
Almost all filtered out and left Justin Townes Earle and a guy named "Guy" on stage. They played for a half hour and were really good.
Felice Brothers rocked it.....lots of energy and guests. Lotsa fun on stage.
Dave Rawlings Machine blew me away. Basically it's Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch but Dave is the leader of this group. They covered Bright Eyes "Method Acting", Neil Young "Cortez the Killer" and an awe-inspiring "Queen Jane Approximately" from Bob Dylan. "Sweet Tooth" was anothr highlight.
OCMS was awesome. Big party. lotsa guests.
Ending songs and encores were all bands on stage taking turns with each other's songs.
