While I try to keep it positive, my girlfriend has fallen in love with this guy. I don't really know if it's his music or him that she's so smitten with lately. While I have to admit that his music is definitely different from....well...anything you might normaly expect to hear outside of a broadway musical about a spunky pre-teen orphan who has finaly found his self and his triumphant voice after living an overly dramatic life of Dickensian strife and hardship, I just can't bring myself to give this guy any credit or true artistic respect at all. I'm not saying that he's untalented (by any means). I'm just saying that what he's doing just seems like a really bad joke to me. Here's his MySpace link: www.myspace.com/ffinalffantasy
I know I can't ever express these thoughts to her and since no one else I know has a any clue who he is, I would love your opinion on this one. Am I totally wrong here or is he one of the least relevant musicians around today? And is this not the dumbest damned picture you've ever seen?
("Don't Just Go Back. Arrive!" Right? )
Am I missing something?

I actually really like his music. Caught his set at Pitchfork and he's really talented too. However sometimes his lyrics are a bit offputting. He's said that in real life he's not that flamboyant, but in his songs there's a bunch of phallic references which he sings so beautifully that you almost fail to notice he's talking about towering erections. All in all though I think he's really talented, and songs like The CN Tower Belong to the Dead are really great songs. Just my opinion.

I don't know, I think he's just a different type of songwriter. Sometimes his songs are kind of silly, but then other times they're really serious and have some really weighty lines in them. I don't think you can compare him to Mariah Carey.
