Being the usual cheapskate that I am, I am looking to build a canopy for me and my buddies for this year's Bonnaroo. Has anyone ever attempted this?
I'm thinking thick PVC pipes, all easily assembled/disassembled, each connection secured by thick steel pins through drilled holes. Maybe 6 feet tall side poles going to a height of 8 feet in the middle. Then buy a heavy duty tarp (www.creativeshelters.com/Tarps/Canopy-Tarp.aspx?fnMenuName=SilverHeavyDutySunBlockerTarp) for the top with some grommets to secure it to the frame.
Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Has anyone every attempted this before? And what size should I be aiming at if I want to cover the entire area behind my car.
the money you spend and the time putting it all together you're better off just buying a used one at a goodwill/rummage sale.
Here's a nice 10x10 for 88$ (brand new)

Wow that's a great deal. I looked around a bit for canopies, but the best I found was 8' x 8' for $90 at Wal-Mart. Thanks for the help, though I still may build my own just for the fun of it.

I have to agree with the crowd and suggest buy one. Check craigslist somebody is always selling one here. If you do the experiment though post pictures please

you may also find someone you could borrow one from before roo. do you know anyone who has a family who does yard sales or flea markets? tailgaters also have shade tents etc. i got my shade tent from walmart for 40 bucks. well worth the money
we tried to build a shade thing on the back of a truck and it kept falling when the wind would blow. thats why i just bought one.

Great! I was hoping someone who'd seen it done would chime in. I've talked to my room mates, and we're going to do it. We're a house of engineering students; I'm sure we can get it done well. I want to design it with the tarp coming down the side walls to keep our morning sun as well. I want it to be massive like you describe. I want it to be as big as possible (but still fit nicely) because shade is a LIFE SAVER at 'Roo, and we'll also be using it for our yard.
I'm thinking the dimensions will be around 10 feet by 15 feet. Do y'all think this would fit behind the car in the regular camping areas, or fit by an RV in that area?
I'm not sure as we have only done VIP. The two of them set it up and disassembled it rather quickly for such a large structure. Didn't look too terribly complicated. Just remember you need to get those poles in that hard ground somehow and stake it very well.

In my years at Roo...the best thing I have figured out is to put my tent INTO a screen tent. Then hang tarps off the side/sides where the sun comes up. This keeps the cool air UNDER the screen tent since the sun cannot get to it. Sounds a bit off ~ but I swear you will be able to sleep until 2pm if you wish. It really really works wonders!

^^This is what I plan on this year. I'm bringing a 10 x 10 canopy, tarps, and a two man tent. My tent last year was simply too big to provide any shade over it. Prob gonna skip the rain fly if possible.
PLease take some pics if you get this thing built. It seems like its a common question on here when it gets closer to June.

I'm sure you guys can DIY just fine, but just in case- Dick's, Academy, and most outdoor stores have giant sales on canopies closer to Roo time. We bought a 10X10 last year at Dick's for ~$60. I seem to recall a thread about this, I know for sure it's been posted about, if I come across it I'll be sure to send it your way. Good luck!
Also: Instead of your side walls coming straight down, | | ,you might consider lean-to walls, / \ it provides much more space with the same concept, you've probably already thought about that but I figured I'd throw in the idea nonetheless.
I bought mine out of season on sale. It's the EZ Up style, but a different brand. I've used it a lot and it's been totally worth what it cost. I originally bought it after Roo 06 and didn't go back to Roo until 09. I used it plenty of times in between to make it worthwhile. For Roo 09 it was a lifesaver during all the rain and great for meeting people in volunteer camping.
I suggest you scotchgard or otherwise waterproof the canvas top, though, I was experiencing some minor leakage during the heavy rains.

I know this is a bit early, but I am planning my camp to keep sane while I wait for the Line-up! Do I need to think about mosquito netting? I am flying in & want to keep it simple.

I dont think I saw a single bug the whole weekend. Mosquitos love my blood and I didn't get bit once. I have no idea what they spray the grounds with but it has to be pretty heavy duty.

I bought the cheap $30 ozark trail wal mart canopy. It took a little more effort to put up than an EZ up. It came down in the storm but was easily put back together. But I only spent $30 and had shade all weekend, with no serious complaints or problems.
Can one person put up one of those cheap canopies if they really had to? The EZup style ones are pretty easy, but I'm not against a cheap one to get me buy if I can put it up buy myself if necessary.
