last year was my first year going... prodigy and crystal castles sold me on it. But none of the artists this year really seem worth the admission to me. I'm tired of Tiesto headlining every year, he's old, boring, and dated. And Deadmau5 is good, but is he really so big now that he deserves headliner status?
Well - this is phase one of the lineup. They always announce the big headliner on the second phase - so obviously this is mostly mid-level acts, so the big headliner is yet to come.
Forget Tiesto...there are like 90000 other acts to see while Tiesto is on. It's kind of nice cause all of the 16 year old kids who only know Tiesto go to his show and the other stages aren't as crowded
I AM SO THERE. Bought tickets to this and the Juicy Beach party today, actually, as soon as the lineup came out. This is by far the most diverse lineup I've seen since I've been going - excited that they're branching out into dubstep and jamtronica some
Can you guys tell me what the festival is like? Lineup is fantastic for me. Where is the festival? How many stages? How late? What's the crowd like? Thanks

The festival is in a park on the oceanfront, right in the heart of downtown miami. It's a beautiful place; a really big park. According to the flyer there's over 16 stages and 200 DJ's, bands, and producers. I think alot of those stages are small tents though (think arcade discoteque or silent disco)
The crowd... I don't have much good to say about it, but it's not too bad. All I can say is it's not like Bonnaroo. Alot of drunk arseholes and snobby girls. Lots of people rolling their brains out. But DEFINITELY alot of hot girls though.
The show ends by 12, but if you have a little extra cash there is a crapload of awesome after parties everywhere downtown, most within walking distance. Ultra music festival is actually just the main attraction of the yearly winter music conference, in which damn near every DJ and Electronic producer in the world are in miami for a week. Besides the few 'Ultra Exclusive Headliners', almost every act at the festival plays another show that weekend. The afterparties are often better than the festival. Which is why I'm considering just skipping ultra and doin the afterparties instead.
I agree with Laggy - most of the stages are smaller tents, like the arcade discotheque. Really there are 5 "main" stages - the first one when you walk in (which is sort of small), the main stage (what stage sized), the biscayne stage (about the size of the which stage), the Carl Cox tent (about the same as This Tent/That Tent) and the tent in the middle which has been drum n bass before, house, etc - it's usually a "specialized" tent that is also about the same size as This Tent/That tent. There are other stages but they are very small and no one really goes to them.
The crowd isn't too bad - there are a lot of drunk people and a lot of otherwise inebriated people, but it depends on the show you're at. Every different branch of EDM has their own subset of fans, so you really encounter a variety of people. Mostly I find that the crowd is very open and loving, but it's not a Bonnaroo scene, it's definitely different.
They have to end the shows at midnight due to city laws, but like laggy said there are TONS of great afterparties going on - pretty much anyone you want to see (if you are willing to pay). For example, we are seeing Robbie Rivera (and a whole host of others) at the Juicy Beach party on Thursday and then will be seeing Sasha on Saturday night.
I think it's totally worth it, esp. from a "bang for your buck" perspective as most of the afterparties cost a pretty penny. But you could totally go to Miami and just do the WMC parties themselves - it all depends on what kind of scene you're looking for.
And laggy I can't believe you live in Miami and have never been to any of WMC parties!

I've been interested in going to Ultra but the cost always seems excessive....gen admission tix for the weekend comes to about $190. The lineup looks pretty good though...and more to come.

Where did you get that crazy impression? You must have misread. Last year was my first year actually going to Ultra, but for 2 or 3 years before that I've been going to the WMC afterparties, as well as the day parties (there's always awesome pool parties and beach parties in south beach). I'm a basshead so I always try and catch the World of Drum n Bass. Usually they have just about the entire DnB line-up of Ultra (which kind of takes away alot of my incentive to go to Ultra, since 75% of what I wanna see is the DnB artists, and I can see them all here for $30-40 instead of $190.) Problem is it's always the Thur before Ultra, and I work fridays. Laundry Bar/Black Sheep bar used to have awesome free parties all week long for WMC, but they closed down this year so I guess I'll be bleeding my wallet out a bit more. Future Sound of Breaks always throws an awesome party too but it's like $35-40 usually and I've never shelled out the dough. And if you're into IDM like me, schematic usually throws a party that weekend, with alot of local and regional IDM acts. As WMC nears I'll be doing some research into whats going down that weekend, and I'll report back.
Thanks for the info everyone. I'm actually moving to Miami this weekend from the Midwest, and was debating going to Ultra, since the Roo is out for me this year. I figured I could find some good Info (pardon the pun) on here, and I was right.
laggy, I'd love a more in-depth report about what's going as the weekend draws near. Feel free to post in here or PM me.

I bet phase 2 has Justice, because there are so many daft punk and justice feinds (Daft Punk = pretty much impossible). Also more drum and bass such as sub focus and chase and status. MSTRKRFT and/or Boys Noize will be there. I dont see the prodigy going again but they might surprise us. I am also hoping for some Fatboy Slim, calvin harris, caspa, Aphex Twin, Basement Jaxx, Danger, modeselektor, Mr. Oizo, Proxy, RJD2, royksopp, SOULWAXX!, Flying Lotus., vitalic and sts9.... I think they will get La Roux this year as last years crystal castles.

I'm willing to bet on Justice. I hope you're right about mstkrft and boys noize. I'd also love to see modeselektor... and aphex twin? I think that's more unlikely than daft punk, but if he were there I'd shell out the $190 without thinking twice

Oh fo sho. I threw down the 100 dollars (wait, I mean 140. Cough, Cough) on the pre sale tickets. I just decided it would be an epic line up because the festival keeps expanding more and more and I was in love with last years line up. I really think/hope they will step it up for phase 2 though. The festival knows that people will be pissed if there is no justice or daft punk, so i think we will get justice. Boys Noize and MSTRKRFT seem logical, although if they pick one i think it will be boys noize because of his amazing new album (I fucking love gax+starter+jeffer).
It is hard to tell who else they will book though because this initial line up is so strange. Who would have though they would book disco biscuits, lotus, bassnectar, ghostland, glitch mob or the pretty lights. They never had artists like this in previous line ups. I would be sold if they got danger, fatboy slim, justice and aphex twin (wont happen). Although, we are due for fatboy slim and we are owed justice.
Either way, I think we will all be blown away by the finalized list of performers because the festival keeps expanding so it can invite more acts.

I would be sold with the current line-up if they knocked about $50 off the final ticket price by doing away with the ridiculous service fees. They're really going to need another mind-blowing line-up to get my to spend almost $200 in this economy. Especially since I'm trying to save all the money I can for Bonnaroo.

Yea me and my buds copped a 4 person hotel room for 50 a night. We are going to try to sleep 5 or 6 in there so we will be paying 20ish bucs each for both nights haha. Its .7 miles away from ultra. I think I will be able to pay for the whole experience in under 350, some how

fill me in, who is the dub step? I'm unfamiliar with a bunch of names on the list.
On the record, I really like dubstep, but DRUM AND BASS >DUBSTEP I really really really hate how dubstep is overtaking drum n bass in miami, almost entirely. It should be it's own thing, not a replacement or substitute for DnB

I dont really feel that much. To me they are very different. You should check out the dub step artists on the line up (rusko, benga, caspa, bassnectar=kinda dub stepish). My favorite is Rusko. You will notice it is very slow in beat and is more about bass. The rhythm of dup step is based more off the bassline than the drums/synths. You can only imagine how much fun these slow loud basslines are in a live show. Check out theses songs by rusko: Cockney thugs, jahova, day n night (rusko remix), the moaners and woo boost.

dubstep is huge in Pittsburgh right now too and really gets thrown into the dnb scene as its more accepted there but our promoters are very careful to keep the 2 separate. Definitely check out Rusko and Caspa if you arent familiar with them
