I'm heading to a conference in Atlanta Feb 25-28 which leaves me with three childfree evenings/nights to try to catch some music. I'll be staying downtown and would love advice from anybody about places in the area I can catch some tunes.
Gotta take advantage of the opportunity to catch something before June. Thanks!!!

Looks like Sangreal covered the events. My favorite venue is the Fox, but they have nothing going on that weekend. Next 2 favorites are Tabernacle and Variety Playhouse. The Variety is right down the street from the Five Spot in Little Five Points, so you could see DSO, then stumble down to "Yo Momma's Big Fat Booty Band" (the five spot is more of a bar, and always seems to have music going on after shows at the Variety). Also, there are some great places in L5P for boozing and eating before the shows. I recommend the Vortex for burger-and-beer lovers. The Brewhouse is great, as well. They have a super yummy drink called the painkiller, you can get level 1, 2, or 3 (1 is to cure the hangover, 2 is perfect, 3 is party time!!) ........So there's your Friday night ;D (L5P is very near downtown, but you will need to take a cab...it'll be a short ride, though, just too long to walk ) I would avoid Jay-Z at Phillips. Traffic sucks everywhere in Atlanta, and everything is very spread out...we sprawl for like 2 hours in every direction, so I would not go to anything where I had to leave the city.
Sorry for the novel! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, I've lived here forever

The Fox is definitely a fav for me as well, saw moe. there in 06, front row. The Tabernacle is a VERY close second. It's an old church converted into a music venue. If you get a chance...
i guess i didn't answer your question. i only told you what shows are coming up. my favorite venue is atlanta is the tabernacle, by far. variety playhouse, fox, center stage and the earl are also cool.
^Really I did not go in the building, but I thought the little amphitheater had great sound, reasonable food and beverage, and a pretty lax security policy. Admittedly that was the only time I have been there.

actually it's not that bad. it's run down but they have good shows and i've never had any problems there. i've never been to a show at the amphitheater part.
^The ampitheater was pretty chill, one of my favorite things was they had a place in the fence set up so you could order a pizza and have it delivered to you at the show. That same weekend I saw Sasha and Digweed, at a weird little club in a strip mall beside a Burlington Coat Factory. That was pretty crazy as well.

You were at that Sasha and Digweed show? The one where you had to go through metal detectors to get in? hahah...it was an AMAZING show though. Had a blast
My favorite venues in Atlanta are the Masquerade, the Tabernacle, Variety Playhouse, and Filter (if you're looking for a nightclub DJ type event).
I also agree with everything about Little 5 Points. Go to the Vortex and get a cheeseburger...I cannot stress this enough!

You were there? I saw some crazy crap go down in that club, and we stayed until when the sun came up.
I second The Earl. Can not stress how chill & laid back this place usually is. Great juke box as well.
It is a small bar/club, that holds maybe 200 people max. Really happening on weekend nights. It is THE place in Atlanta to catch local up-and-comers and small touring bands, and it retains a great communal atmosphere to drink with friends and random ATL people. Last time I was there, I was randomly sitting at a table next to the lead singer of Mastadon.
If you get lucky, you'll catch a band here before they get huge. In 2000, Bright Eyes opened up for Daniel Johnston. A few years ago, Vampire Weekend played. It is a staple to swing by The Earl whenever I go into town, and I'm going there on Feb 20 to catch another show.
Seriously, just check it out. Great food. Great music. Great staff. Great times.

We were there spent the majority of the night in "that corner" (yeah...I'm sure you know the one I'm referring to...it was a good night) and there was some craziness at that club. Great show - I wish they would do more "all-night" shows like that in ATL.
^Hell you probably sat next to me at some point then. I was the one with all the little led toys, I still do not know how I got them in past that metal detector.
Back to the OP, you picked a good weekend (surprising for February). As someone who can't see a ton of shows anymore, I'll be around a lot that weekend:
9/25 Pat Green (not interested, but playing the tiny Variety) 9/25 Alice in Chains (can't go) 9/26 Alice in Chains (Tabernacle - going) 9/26 Dark Star Orchestra (Variety - going after AiC) 9/27 Jay-Z, Young Jeezy (not going) 9/27 Trey (tabernacle - which to choose Trey or Muse) 9/27 Muse, Silversun Pickups (Gwinnett - which to choose Trey or Muse) 9/27 Dark Star Orchestra 9/28 Reverend Horton Head (The Earl - not going) 9/28 Henry Rollins (Variety - may go)

Just got Portugal. The Man tickets, so I FINALLY will be checking out the Earl. What's the best meal to get there? How early should one arrive for a show while planning to get some grub as well?
