so of course nothing is official yet, but it's being heavily rumored that there will be a different smaller fest on the same weekend that roth would have been, same location, same basic setup

I still don't get what caused all of the problems for Rothbury? My only guess is that the local gov't wanted to make more money off it somehow or other. I was there last year and I thought it was absolutely amazing. It's like they took the bits and pieces of other festivals that were really great and used those ideas for Rothbury. The weather was great and of course, how could anyone not like SHERWOOD FOREST??? They better fix the problem for 2011 or they won't be able to book any decent acts. UGHHHHHHH im soooo mad

I don't know what caused it either, but if it was related to government, I would expect to find some sort of reference to any problems -- local newspaper articles, city council minutes, something. However, if it was company problems, then you would not find much reference to it.

i would think the main problem was with some ordinances that the city is putting thru(as encourged by the locals) that limit mass gatherings, and require that amplified noise be stopped at 1 a.m.
locals don't realize (or care) how much this kind of thing helps out local economy of a small "village" like Rothbury

– Alcohol. You have to be 21 years old to buy, consume or possess alcohol. It’s the law and you should expect us to enforce it. Alcohol will be available for sale in the Concert area and in the Camping area, with proper ID.
homerjay was right. Apparently Western Michigan's economy is booming so well they don't want the easily made tourism money that tens of thousands of people bring to the area. (yea, right)

That's an interesting article. Nothing in the proposed ordinance (did it even ever end up passing? that article was from early January) seems very out of line or different from what many/most cities do. I can understand festival-goers not liking the idea of no real late-night acts, but other festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza are similar in regards to a cut-off time for late night noise. It mentions that the village was using existing ordinances and applying different ones to rothbury before, so from one standpoint, this is a good move because it puts everything related to a large event into one ordinance.

who knows though? makes me curious though.
What we were told from the township folks is that is was all about money. AEG cut the budget because of the economy and things. So they were trying to get concessions from subcontractors etc so that they wouldn't have to cut the music budget, but they didn't get that. The new Double JJ owners were actually trying to charge them a lot more to keep it on the 4th.
AEG wouldn't put up the money for big headliners and Madison House wouldn't agree to a second rate fest. So it was canceled.
That's the story I got. The township ordinances had nothing to so with it. They were going to give Roth whatever they wanted anyway.

I don't understand. Why did you post this?
Well, 'cause I drink. A lot.
I would not enjoy a fest that would require me to buy each and every beer I drink. Particularly over a holiday weekend.

You don't want to have to buy the beer you drink?
Also, judging by what you posted it seemed like they were saying that you could bring your own (why else use the word "possess") but you would have to be 21. But I guess if it's in the "no-no's" section that means it won't be allowed. IDK.

makes sense... that's definitely a bummer that is was a money disagreement amongst the management.

OK, so I read it wrong. The no no list clearly has a section titled "alcohol".
And yes, I buy my own. wtf kind of smartass question is that?
just being a smartass cuz your post worded it funny. I knew what you meant but it just sounded like "i don't want to have to PAY for my beer" lol.
and like I said, I don't know the real deal with that festival.....though it does seem like you could be right and they don't want people bringing their own. I don't know why any festival would prohibit people from bringing their own drinks but who knows?
