Hi! Making my Bonnaroo plans last year, I happened to come across an ad renting spaces on one of the on-site RV's. Due to the economy it seems these two guys' friends had all bailed out on them, but they had already shelled out the cash for the RV, and they were trying to lessen the load by renting out the remaining 4 spots. I took a shot in the dark and signed up. This was a wise choice!
It was my fourth Bonnaroo. In previous years I had of course had the best weekend of the year, but the camping conditions would always really take their toll on me. I highly enjoy the late nights, but coming back to my tent @ 4 or 5 am (if at all) and squeezing in 2 or 3 hours fitful sleep before the Tennessee sun converts the tent into a dutch oven meant 4 nights of virtual sleep deprivation. With the scorching temps somedays, it really sapped my energy at times and I'd have to seek shelter in one of the air conditioned tents (usually the movie tent was a good bet for a relatively short wait in line). I am far from a neat freak, but I do like to maintain a basic level of hygeine, and I'd inevitably feel uncomfortably dirty a lot of the time. No refrigeration meant all I had was water and granola bars most of the time, unless I wanted to shell out to a vendor for a meal. And despite never having had anything taken, it was always in the back of my mind how easy it would be for someone to steal from my unoccupied tent when I was away, which was at times distracting. Do I need to mention the port-a-potties?
Those first 3 years, I almost looked at it like a Native American Vision Quest, where one would have to undergo an ordeal and suffer before attaining the redemptive experience of revelation.
Doing the RV thing fixed all of these problems and made my experience oh-so-much-less-taxing on my body and mind. A comfortable bed and an air conditioned space meant I got a solid 6 - 8 hours sleep a night (also, the RV provides some sound insulation from around-the-clock festival noise). A CLEAN private bathroom - no wait in line! I showered every morning, and could clean myself up after mud-wading or getting sweat drenched. A fridge for cold drinks and food, a stove - we made egg mcmuffin sandwiches one morning! We got two sets of keys so we could safely lock our stuff up in the RV when we left. The on-site RV area was also ideal, just a couple hundred yards past tent-only.
All this meant I was so much more ready and rearing to party. Many times I'd be down at a show at Centeroo and see people looking fried and wiped-out due to the conditions - realizing that was me the previous 3 years - and I'd make a mental note to myself: must do RV again next year!
Splitting the costs among 5 (or 6) people brings the expense down to $638.40 (or $532) apeice. Really comparable to 4 nights in a decent hotel. And truth is, anything that makes the best weekend of the year even better is priceless in my book!
