last year we brought one bg plastic water bottle into centeroo, for the three of us. that was nice, but it sucked having to refill it all the time and having to carry it. we used a carabiner for a while to attach it to my husband's belt loop but that was sort of awkward. also since it was plastic, it didnt get as hot as i assume aluminim would have, but it let the light in and our water got very warm very quickly... so this year we've decided to each bring our own water into centeroo to cut down on refill trips.
eric wants to get a camelbak. the model we are looking at is the rogue. it seems like a good size, not too big, with good capacity and some psace to carry a few small things into centeroo. www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B000JNL5FM/ref=dp_colorn_3?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&img=0&color_name=4 does anyone have this model? i am trying to figure out if you can put stuff in both areas on the pack, or if the top part is for water and the bottom is storage. its sort of hard to tell from the pics. it kind of looks like you add water to the top portion but maybe you can store things there too.
all he would be putting in there is a cell, program, money/id, tp, mini sani, mini sunscreen, tiny camera, and maybe a few granola bars. all of this stuff plus two packs of cigs fit in my teeny mini crpchet backpack thingy last year with room to spare so it really takes up like 1 cu ft.
for me: i utterly LOATHE the idea of a camelbak. i cant stand to have something on my sweaty sweaty back. super ew. (i know everyone will say i should get one but i would be REALLY uncomfortable, trust me). so i'm thinking of getting a strap for my water bottle. they make ones that are like slings but that still leaves the water bottle exposed and it'll get hot faster i think. i found a cool one from nalgene that encases the bottle so i think it'll keep it cooler, plus it has a little pocket. www.nalgene-outdoor.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=1059 does anyone have this or something similar? i'm trying to get an idea of the pocket size. i am hoping i could at least cram a schedule in there.
kiddo will probably get the same as me. she likes to carry as little as possible.
anyway thanks in advance for the suggestions and advice. i know everyone around here are water-toting pros. we did okay last year but we're going for more efficiency this year, and less trips for water = more shows.

a camelbak will equal less trips to refill when compared to a water bottle. As far as having something on your sweaty back; the camelbak actually helps with this. The cold water and ice in the bak make it feel nice on your back. I don't like feeling wet and cold during latenight, so i fill mine with room temperature gatorade. It still taste great but doesn't make your back wet and cold.
There have been times when i take the bladder out of my bak and just put in a couple bottles of water. Its nice, because most camelbak models aren't as cumbersome as a regular backpack. Hope this helps, happy hydrating!

Camelbaks work pretty well. I don't personally use one on a regular basis, but my friends do and seem to enjoy it. Its not anymore awkward than the normal backpack I usually carry into Centeroo and it holds plenty of water. Its mostly about preference I suppose.

Regarding that pic, both of those pouches are for items. The water pack goes under both of those. Under the top pouch is usually where the water reservoir slides in.
edit: the third picture in the series shows where the reservoir goes.

Using a camelbak was the best thing I did last year, really convenient and awesome. I really don't see how it could be cumbersome, it wasn't heavy at al.

Camelbak is the way to go. It even has built up areas in part that goes against your back to let air circulate. Best thing I bought last year for Roo. It's not cumbersome at all imo. I can't remember which model I have but I think it has about a cubic foot of space in it besides the water reservoir. I held all kinds of shit. Corn, corn holder, dslr, a liter of water, snacks, phone, poncho, schedule, etc... My advice is to go to an outdoors store and try on one. It's amazing how small they are.

To throw in my .02, in the Army pretty much everyone uses a Camelbak, especialy on road marches (Think of like the trek from centeroo to BFE, but you're surrounded by people who might want to kill you and you're wearing 40 pounds of gear). If you dont like the idea of a backpack (they are incredibly small and light) they also make several Bottles with the Bite valve technology. I've already splurged on there .5L insulated stainless steel version, which i will be putting in the back of my runnur.
thanks for all the advice everyone! i think i will try on a camelbak just to see, but when it gets hot i usually dont even wear a shirt. spent most of roo last year in a bathing suit and boxers. husband will definitely have a camelbak but i think i am still going to look around for a carry strap. i'll update you with what i find in case anyone else is curious. thanks
Owning a Camelbak M.U.L.E for several years I can't say enough about it. I looked at the specifications on the Rogue and I think it might me a little small to pack some belongings (TP, Rain poncho, sunscreen, maps) with you. I also think having a hydration pack makes a person drink more and more frequently do to the ease of having a hose on your shoulder.
I think you will have a sweaty back with or without wearing one. A nalgene bottle will not have that much capacity (32 oz) compared to the camelbak.

Having a camelbak def makes you drink more. I averaged 6-8 liters a day, which seems like a lot. I always filled it up before we went into Centeroo, and then two more times in Centeroo each day. I usually went in at noon everyday and didn't leave until 2-3 am.
