I'd like to have a shade house to bring to the Roo this year. My group had one last year, and it was really nice to have in the morning when we were getting ready to go for the day. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'd prefer to not spend a ton of money, since I splurged a little on a nice tent.
Check out ebay; someone was selling some last year pretty cheap. I also saw some shade tents at Target today. They range in price based on the brands and size. I bought a 10' x 10' generic pop-up canopy at K-Mart last year for about $75.00. Held up fine, even in the bad weather.
I would NOT recommend one that's super-cheap though (such as the $10 ones from Wal-Mart). It's likely to be flimsy and not worth your time.
Any EZ-up is fine. I've gotten them as cheap as $40. Look around now as the warmer season starts and places have sales. Got mine at Tractor Supply a few years back for $40.
The cheaper ones with many pieces are okay as long as they have fabric going down the legs for extra strength (see pic). I used one of these for the first few years. More work to put up but I've seen them for $20.
NEVER get the very cheap Walmart ones as they are useless.

Try your local Sears store. I just purchased a 10x9ft "One-Touch" Northwest Territory Screen house for $20. I'm pretty skeptical due to the low price, but the reviews on it were all good. I just got it today & haven't set it up yet, so I'm not sure how great it is, but we'll see! I searched for a link to post, but it says that it is no longer available online, so maybe try to check in-store.

A real ez up will not fail. I bought a "Quest" from Dick's last year, put it up once to test it and took it back. It just seemed way too flimsy. Wolfaroo bought an IU one from walmart and it held up fine for him.

I had a fairly cheap walmart canopy, about 50 dollars, last year. It held up fine. just make sure you have it tied down really well.
Same here. We tied it down really well, and although the velcro did rip off on one corner during the bad storm, the rest of it stayed together just fine I'm not sure if it can live through another storm like last years though.......
I'm on year three with a "quick shade" from home depot and I love it when I put it up right. I think the less you spend, the more you have to set up and tie down, so you can save money if you don't mind the extra work. It all about the weather.

Whatever shade you get, make sure to hang a tarp or something on the side/sides where the sun comes up. This traps the cooler air underneath and keeps it good for sleeping until at least noon if not til two pm.

Listen to this man. He knows his shade. Saved our asses two years in a row

I just bought one of these on Amazon for $40. Don't be afraid of tents that are "used" on Amazon. Most of the time they have never been used, but the box might be damaged or it was returned or something. Just read the description.

No matter how many tarps there are, I cannot sleep that late at Roo. There's too much going on.

I could never sleep that late either, but 9-ish would be nice.
We had a Caravan Canopy for around 5 years. Last year it finally collapsed when the nylon top collected enough rain water when the framing could not handle the weight.
I liked it a lot but I think the roof needed to be a little more sloped so water will not collect.
We are looking for a new one but unfortunately I have not found one with rave reviews.
Sports Authority is having a sale on them now. Link

9ish would be very nice. I don't think I made it past 8am last year or 7am in 04 (so freaking hot) But I'm doing the cot under the ez up this year. I'm not sleeping in my tent unless it rains. That should alleviate any heat problems, at least for a bit. I'm just going to put in some ear plugs and sleep with a nice blankie ;D

I'm thinking about this, if we decide to tent camp instead of RV. Maybe it's too large for tent only camping? It's 30x30, but we could put our tent under it instead of using two easy ups. Most likely this is too large for Bonnaroo altogether I would guess. Sure would be nice though. www.overstock.com/Sports-Toys/Northpole-30-foot-Party-Tent/3145002/product.html

Someone else posted the exact same canopy in another thread. It's too big if you only have one car to camp behind. If you have a group, it may work. If you get to tent only early, it may work. Not sure about VIP but it's probably still too big.
GA camping is the width of your car x 10feet unless you are lucky or really fast.

i'm an over planner. seriously. so last year we went through three or four canopies, BEFORE bonnaroo. i bought them each in succession and set them up im my yard and left them there deliberately when it was going to be rainy and windy.
i love a bargain more than anything but with canopies YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! i returned all of them and ended up with an actual ez-up the kind with accordion sides. i got it at walmart on sale for $88.
let me say that we saw several canopies destroyed in the storms at roo last year. ours never swayed. i'm actually buying a second one for this year for added shade over my tent.
shell out a few bucks for the better canopy and you will be happy you did.
oh, and don't hang cute little lanterns under the canopy at night, unless you want bugs. lots of bugs.
