Last year I followed directions that I found at inforoo to build a flag pole out of PVC piping. The problem is the pvc is too flexible. I ended up having to brace it to the roof rack to keep it from flexing too much.
Has anyone had luck with aluminum extension flag poles?

PVC comes in two different thicknesses, Schedule 40, which is .109 inches thick for 1/2 inch pipe, and Schedule 80, which is .147 inches thick for 1/2 inch. The thick walled pipe would be significantly stiffer than the thin wall, if that's what you tried before.

1/2" PVC is way too flexible. Get a bigger size. Even 3/4" is much stiffer but 1" or 1 1/2" is best. Just try and bend it at the store and you'll see the difference. Sch 80 is a good idea too but not always available. I used to use 3/4" or 1".
I now use an aluminum telescoping pole I got free off Craigslist (I think its for a pool skimmer) You could also try an telescoping paint roller handle but PVC is cheapest and works if you get the right size/thickness.
i'm thinking of sliding a skinnier pvc into a fatter pvc to slide it up so that it'll raise (like a telescope) and then use bolts to lock into place..hopefully it'll work..the top where the flag attaches will be the same from the flag guide..
I built a pvc flag pole for last year's bonnaroo and it worked great through the crappy weather. It was 13 ft in length. I split it up into 3 sections so it could be easily transported. To connect the sections I used pvc connectors. The main key in my flag pole was putting in guide wires. To do this I simply cut 2 holes next to each other (the holes should make a "X" and go fully through the pvc pipe each) about 2/3 the way up. Then took 2 ropes and put each one through their separate holes. Make sure it's tightly anchored into the ground with some beastly stakes. I also connected a stake to the pole it self to give it more support
- 13ft of a thick PVC pipe (thicker the better) i forgot what mine is - 5 stakes (4 stakes for the rope, 1 for the pole) - 2 long ropes
Word to the wise, don't put up a pirate flag cause I will steal it. I used my buddy's pirate flag last year and someone took it, so i'm going to get one in return this year.
One of my friends bought a telescoping flag pole last year. Not certain whether it was aluminum, but definitely metal. It extended from a base we anchored beneath a car tire, and went up at least ten feet if not higher. We flew two flags on it all weekend and didn't seem to have any problems.
i keep wanting to bring a flag, even thought it's not really very hard to find our campsite. but im too lazy to make one out of pvc and cant figure out a way to anchor it without driving up carrying a bucket of cement.
and if the cost of a premade telescoping metal one wasnt prohibitive enough, there's the unshakable notion that i'm begging to be electrocuted. i come from a major lightning area. lightning = BAAAD.
I've found that the best & easiest way to hold up a flagpole at Bonnaroo is to use zip ties. Use about six or eight zip ties and fasten it to one leg of your EZ-up. I've done it that way for the past three years and it made it through some wind and a couple nasty storms without any problems.
I got a nice telescoping flagpole from sams.com. I used a 2' piece of 2" PVC IIRC with an end cap glued on as a holder (just big enough so the pole would slide into it), and used hose clamps to secure this to my ez-up leg, as high as it will go. I then drilled a hole thru the flagpole and PVC holder, and ran a cable lock thru that and around the ez-up frame. It worked perfectly even in the high winds of Thursday (I did take it down when lightning was popping around that night). I flew various flags, mostly my Mardi Gras flag, and even a pirate flag. Nobody could steal my flag. Everyone around me said it was an awesome flag and to keep the Mardi Gras flag because they were all using it for a landmark to give their friends directions.

^this I used a 5 foot length of 1/2 inch PVC pipe and drilled some holes in each end. I attached it to my canopy with zip ties and attached my dollar store wind sock thingy. It was high enough to be seen over the other cars and was sturdy in the weather. It was also easy to transport and inexpensive. You may be able to attach it to your roof rack if you don't have a canopy.

Just drive up with someone that can swing a mallet and you're good to go. The ground is *usually* not too dry in June here so once you get through the thatch of grass, it's pretty soft.
Considering getting a flag pole to bring this year. Anyone here know about the maximum height that works is? I was thinking of getting anywhere in the 25-35 foot range but I dont want it to be so high that it could get blown down easily and damage other campers cars, tents, etc.

We over engineered our flag pole last year. In the end it was 25 feet. We had ten feet of steel pipe mounted to a 2x4 (which we parked the RV on top of) then another 15 feet of PVC on top of that. We had another 5 foot section but we left it off because it got too wobble. We wrapped the steal pipe in a pool noodle to keep it from messing up the car, then had guidewires at the halfway point to secure the flag that also served as one of the ends for our shade tarp.
I bought an extending aluminum flagpole for this year but I'm having trouble finding a flag I like. Any suggestions for websites or stores that carry a wide variety of flags? The pole will accommodate a 3X5 flag.

Last year we had one of the tallest flag poles in TO, and all i did was snag an extension pole used for painting (it's about 7' collapsed and 12" extended) and then I just caked on the duct taped about half way up a leg on my EZ-UP. It worked perfectly and proved to be extremely durable. We flew a 3x5 American flag that had a Native American face on it.

Last year, I designed our own flag at www.windsensations.com. It came out to be about $40, but it was really worth it I think. I used a photo of our friend that couldn't make it last year without telling him. He was very confused when he started seeing pictures of him tagged at Bonnaroo. 28" x 40" Also, a picture of the PVC flagpole I made.

Thank you! I've seen the photo flags and think they're awesome! Unfortunately I've got to use a horizontal style flag. I've been searching and found some good, cheap contenders -
I'm going Groop Camping this year and we're currently holding votes for our favorite. So far it's the rainbow peace one. If you see it flying, come over and say "Hey!"

Holy crap, i was camped really close to you last year dude, i used your flag to find my campsite last year, i didn't have a flag of my own then. I'm planning on having one this time, not sure what kind of flag i want though.

haha that's awesome! I was hoping someone would recognize it. A lot of people came up to us and said it was a big help.
I like the rainbow peace sign as well as the skull. I hope to see one of them next year!
Those are the two everyone has picked! Well, we had one vote for the Free Beer... Tomorrow! one. The pole holds two flags but I feel like one of them should have a bright background. Anyway, at the very least we're for sure going w/ the rainbow peace one.

here is a picture of my tent pole set up. its a 6'-12' extension painters pole that you can get at any hardware store for $30-$40. Home Depot has them for 30 (link below).
all i did was duct tape the bottom of the pole to a leg of my canopy. the top of the pole has an additional little extension thing with the small pens flag, and then an LED glowstick i got at walmart ($8) that we had on flash mode and its supposed to be light up for some ridiculous amount of time so we didnt have to worry about changing batteries or anything.
