I'm coming in from New York, so it will be quite a long trip. Have to make the decision for my group to maximize the time there taking in account people's vacation days from work and returning the rental RV. What makes more sense:
Get there noonish Thursday (depart NY Wed night) and leave the festival Sunday around 3pm to make it back to NY Monday morning.
OR
Get there real early Friday morning (depart NY Thurs morn) and leave at midnight Sunday night to make it back to NY Monday night.
What are the pros and cons of each? What situation would let me see the most quality acts/most festivities? What situation allows me to enter the festival in the least amount of time?
i've never driven to roo, so there i may not be the most help. but, i wouldnt make a solid plan until you see what bands are playing what days. sunday you could miss a great closing set by dmb(possibly), but thursday is always full of great new bands you'll want to have discovered when everyone is talking about them down the road, kinda like passion pit last year.
my vote is not to miss thursdays cause headliners won't define your roo experience, discovering new things will. but, i'm sure whatever you'll choose you'll have a great time.

Interesting perspective. What day is it easier to get into the festival - Thursday or Friday?
Also, when do they announce the schedule, I have to make decisions about vacation days from work.

I think we got the schedule in May.
That's a really tough decision. It's a crapshoot as to how long it'll take. I waited 7 hours in 04 and around 5-6 last year. I've never driven in on Friday.
Thursday is a lot of fun but so is every other day. I love seeing the new bands playing to the huge crowd. Most don't get that chance very often so they bring it. Tent shows are usually where it's at for me and most others on this forum.

If you can hold off for awhile, I'd wait until the schedule comes out. If you can't wait, I'd get there on Thurs. You're going to be super antsy to get down there. Waiting to leave any longer than you have to will be torturous.

If you get there Thursday, you can check out all the shops and get some freebies and stuff....unless you are just jonesing to see DMB (assuming they are the closer) I would def. get in Thursday.

My vote goes for getting there for Thursday night. Everyone is so jacked to be there. The amount of intensity is unbearable. By Sunday, some are petered out and things are definitely winding down. There is still much fun to be had and many double up to get in the last ounce of fun on Sunday though. For me, nothing beats the excitement of entering under the arch for the first of many times on Thursday and doing it with everyone else.

I've been to Roo the last four years, but only came in on Thursday once.
In '06, I came in Friday afternoon and was in line less than two hours I think. I'd stopped at Walmart, then came in the exit that takes you by the winery off I-24. But I got parked pretty far out, near the cell phone tower.
In '07, I got there Thursday, stopped at Walmart, came in the temp exit off I-24 around 2 pm I think, got in very quickly and got my closest campsite, maybe five minutes from the ferris wheel.
In '08, I got there Friday, through the temp exit, short wait and again was near my '06 spot with a pretty long walk.
Last year, I volunteered and came in Wednesday afternoon. So, there was no line and I camped in Volunteer Camping.
So for me, coming in Thursday the one year that I did via the temp exit has worked better than the two years I came in on Friday. I've never left before Monday afternoon and have never had any problem getting out quickly.
Last year I had someone in my group that needed to be back to work Tuesday morning. (We're from North NJ). We headed to B'roo Tuesday at about 7p and got into manchester around 9a Weds morning. We hung out at WalMart most of the day and then headed into the farm Weds night. Long story short, we left Sunday around 5p and got back to Jersey super early monday morning. So that my friend still had a whole day to unpack, clean herself, and relax before going back to work the next morning. I think it worked out well personally.
