Mine was great. Used turbotax.com and it only cost me like 30 bucks and an hour of my time. I don't have a lot of complicated info or anything like that. Just one job and student loans i'm paying back. But it was super easy and I got a decent chunk of change.
Mine was great as well. Did tons of work on the house that I was able to deduct, resulting in a sizable return. Now the key is for me not to blow it all in one place.

Yeah, mine was excellent. Didn't take long at all. Was getting back a good deal, and then found out I was getting an extra $400. Spent it all in a week, but we got a bunch of stuff we really needed, including plane tickets to visit my family in a couple of months.
My tax return was higher than I've had in the past so that was good news. But I spent a lot of it today on much-needed car repairs. Not a fun way to spend it but it was either that or putting it toward my credit card debt... so it probably wouldn't have been much fun either way.
Instead of dirt and poison, we have rather chosen to fill our hives with honey and wax; thus furnishing mankind with the two noblest of things, which are sweetness and light.
yeah, i was able to deduct about 2k in fancy new windows... that, plus mortgage deduction = a refund! not much, about 400 bucks. but then i owed MA about 400 bucks, so it's a wash.

I got a decent return, well, not considering how much I pay in every year. I have an accountant do mine because I rent out a room of my house. That means I can write off a portion of utilities, a percentage of my house, etc... I have them take out an extra $50 every pay so that I am guaranteed a refund of some sort. For some reason, federal didn't take out as much as last year although I made pretty much the same amount. It may have something to do with working two jobs. The second one puts me in a higher bracket. Anyways, it's enough to pay off all of my credit card debt so I can start anew.

MrKC did you have to itemize to deduct the house upgrades?
I don't file my taxes myself, I just give all my info to the family accountant, so I'm not sure. I think you do need to itemize them, though. Also, they only accept $7,500 in deductions for things like windows, insulation, etc. I just finished building my house so I had way more than that but the most I was allowed to deduct was $7,500.
i have to be honest, at 25 this has been my first year to be financially independent from my mother. but she still did my taxes this time! haha. i promise next year, i will be a for real complete adult. she said she just some sort of easy file thing and that it wouldn't be confusing at all. she just told me on thursday i got $1300 back. i just really have no clue if that is good or not, but i was pumped. i was expecting that most people get back like $400 or something and so anything over $1000 was a big surprise to me.
though, i told another teacher at school that's how much i got, and she was like...is that a lot for you?? making feel like it isn't a lot. so someone fill me in on this....i know get more b/c i have no dependents, but how else is it decided how much you get back??

I have a dependent that I'm claiming this year. Had my accountant not changed a couple of things, I would have still been paying federal. This year I got $500 from federal and $1400.00 back from state only because, like I said above, I have them take out $50.00 per pay. I've never gotten back more than $2,000. More kids, more money. I don't know what most people get back. Ask your co worker. She should be willing to tell you how much she's getting back since you told her. Tit for tat.

We got nailed. Owe Uncle Sam close to 2K. Many of you haven't experienced this yet, but this was the first year we could no longer claim the kids. My wife forgot to change her withholdings, and thus, we have a giant bill.

well, here is the thing. if the govt owes you a lot of money, you screwed up. you gave them an interest free loan for the year. so a good (high) return is a bad thing, financially speaking.
on the other hand, some folks arent very responsible and would have pissed the money away, so getting that big return is somewhat of a windfall.

i OWE $575 fuck the government
working two jobs last year put me in a higher tax bracket, ghey and so working little hours at the battery store, and not make much over 100 per week. no fed got taken out? my fault for not checking and fixing this. but i am royally pissed, oh and i owe 100 for new tags on the plate this month

The 1200 on fed wasn't really a "get back" so much as it was a credit for the deductions for kids and child care.
I have our withholding set so that we have more money each pay period. I don't like the govt having my money interest free - I'd rather have it and out it in a savings account each month via automatic deposit. I never see it, I don't miss it and it earns interest.

Bump because I did my taxes last night! My refund will be around $11,000 Federal and State combined because I bought a house AND a car last year. Though the housing credit has to be mailed in so I filed my regular return electronically and am then going to do an amended return later. But hey, $3k now and $8k later isn't bad either!
For 2008, I got back around $900 Federal and $400 State. Life was much simpler then and I breezed through taxact.com in no time. I've also done H&R Block online, but Tax Act was cheaper. This year it was so freaking confusing that I went into H&R Block. In addition to the house and the car, I moved from DC to MD so had two w2s. Ugh.

I got mine at H&R too. Cost me close to $100 but that's 'cause 'cause I had an extra for to get a refund since I pay for school. I got back $2500. We bought a house as well and did an amended return a couple of weeks ago. They said it would take months to get the $8k though. I was hoping to have it before 'roo and the lady said it could take until August since they're so backed up.
Oh well, still extremely happy since I took half the money and put it in my savings, the rest was used to pay off some debt. Not a bad year.
