I have a friend who is going to Roo with me this year. In addition to being a big guy, he's got some knee problems so he's worried about the walk if we end up camped in BFE. So my question is, how frequently do the little golf cart taxis run and do they run all night? Would we be able to catch a ride back after the Late Night shows if need be? We went in 2008 but were in VIP so we didn't really notice the taxis.

I know nothing about the golf cart taxis. I didn't even know they had any. Maybe you could look into the access camping if he has a knee problem. I don't know what they require though.
The taxis do run all day and night, no question but as someone with the worst feet in the world I would agree with freedom that you might want to look into access. Your friend would need to get a temporary handicapped placard from your doctor and/or DMV. Good luck!

On how frequently they hit up the Pods is a hit and miss. Depends on how bad the traffic is because they won't be able to reach a certain Pod near your tent. That happened to me. It was Friday and there were still people coming in and I was camped in BFE and she couldn't drive on the same road as the cars. But after Friday traffic it's usually not bad at all.
I used them after the late night sets last night and they were totally worth it. I was down in the James Bond BFE and had no problems catching one going my way on Thursday night going both directions.

Just remember to tip the drivers. They are working for tips only and they have to rent the carts. At least, that's what my driver said. Seems like they get a raw deal.

i camp up in accessible with my buddy and he uses the taxi system a lot. i didnt really understand a lot about it but i think its one of those things that if you look into it you find a lot of information. he went back and forth with no worries and he did tip and he met some cool people...but i never actually saw the chariots myself.

It's true, at least the tips part. I never heard they had to rent them though, that sucks pretty hard.

That's what I was told. The driver we had said they weren't cheap to rent either. I can't see how it would be worth it to do the job. But he may have just been saying that to get a better tip, who knows. I guess it would be an experience.

taxis are $5 1 way.
i believe the last taxi(s) leaves centeroo at 330am each night.
they have a stand outside of centeroo. just remember what pod you're camped in. if it's pod 1, you don't want to jump on the taxi that takes you to pod 3.

One of our drivers last year told us that Bonnaroo contracted with an outside company for the taxis and the drivers, and that all of the drivers had chauffer's licenses. Maybe the company had to rent the golf carts, but I can't imagine the drivers not getting paid unless they were tipped. That would definitely suck. I guess it never even occurred to our party of four that we should tip our driver after we just watched him put our $20 in his pocket.
To answer the original post - those Taxis were the best money I spent at Roo. I was in Pod 1, and we always had a ride to and from. totally worth budgeting $10/day to get to and from.
Also, Funny that all your drivers told you guys they work for tips... My driver (had the same one about 5 times ) told me they do indeed rent the cart - it's $600/day. So if you do the math that's $2400 for 4 days. But she said that after you pay off that $2400, all money is yours to keep. That's why some of those drivers literally run from sun up to sun...up again - because they bust their asses to make the initial 2400, then make bank the last couple days. I tipped the drivers that I enjoyed, especially the ones who let me control the horn!

Thanks for the advice folks. My friend talked to his doc today and she agreed that he probably shouldn't walk that much so she's getting him a temp handicap tag. Hooray for accessible.

so the ole 20% rule applies unless the cabbie is a donkey? i have been lucky to be relatively close so have not needed to take a cab yet. i have this sinking feeling this year i may be far away.

Wow, they could make some serious money.
Yup, that's what I've heard from the drivers too. Once they raise enough to pay off their taxi rental they keep the rest. I mean think about it... if they are workin for tips only, how could they keep track of how many rides they have given any particular day?
for those who utilized the taxis last year, how much did you tip each time you hitched a ride??
I think we only took one from the north east corner of the farm to centeroo carrying some of our gear plus two people and I think I gave him $2. I usually tip 10-15% for a cab ride in the city so I think that should apply to Roo as well. To me, it depends on the service. Is the driver nice, does he/she chat, etc... The taxis are nice for people who need them. But they have to take such a roundabout way through the farm that, during peak travel hours, it's almost as fast to walk. It'd be nice if they had the run of the farm and could take you right where you wanted to go instead of dropping you off at the designated areas. Example: we carried our gear from the car (north of the church) to the taxi stand, got an incredibly slow ride due to all of the pedestrians, got dropped off between the ferris wheel entrance and the arch entrance, then had to carry all of our gear through tent only. We saved some energy by taking the taxi, but, in hindsight, I'd rather have cut through shakedown and saved the $22.

At $5 a ride, an additional $1 is 20%, so that's generally what I'd tip. Honestly, who carries around change at Roo? Of course, there was my one driver who let me blow the train whistle (yessssss), and kept us pretty entertained with her stories of the late night rides, and she generally got 2 or 3 bucks extra... probably why she always picked us up first if she saw us standing around waiting for a ride.
