With the first post you would need a generator. You are correct a inverter to run a air conditioning unit would be large. And even if you did have one, you would need a bank of batteries.
The second post. They are really not air conditioners, they are evaporative coolers (swamp coolers). This form of air conditioning (on a larger scale) is popular in the southwestern part of the United States where the humidity is very low. A set up like this would be counter productive in a climate that has higher humidity.
Basically it is a fan that blows air over a colder object (ice & water), the temperature will be lower then the entering but it will also contain more moisture.
In a high humidity environment you need mechanical (DX - Direct Expansion) in order to pull the moisture out of the air.
In order to operate this "cooler" you would need fans that either run on 12 volts DC, generator or inverter if they ran on 120 volts AC. The amount of ice would be the next item that you would go through. Picture putting piece of ice in a open cooler, now blow hot air over it.
I bought an inverter for this year. I'm planning on running an extension cord through my trunk to my tent. Im going to get one of those box fans and I expect that to be a big upgrade. I have been thniking about the AC thing for a couple years and can't wrap my head around real way to make it happen.
Everytime I feel like I get close I realize i may as well rent an rv

Hey my first ever post on inforoo (first timer here!)
I was also thinking about how I could rig something like this up, I love my A/C so much and my biggest concern about roo is the heat.
My only solution that doesn't require an ass load of power and a heavy air conditioner is some solution where you could use lots of water to suck up the cold during the night and cool the tent once the sun comes up. it would essentially be a radiator system that can run in two directions.
No idea if that would work but it soudns like a hell of a contraption. I bought my inverter for $90 at best buy and it kicks out 400 watts. I got with two other guys and we are planning on taking three seperate tents so it gets less muggy in the morning. Between that, my box fan, and an air matress I think I will be much more comfortable this year.
Im still trying to figrue out a way to effectively tape tin foil around my tent to block the sun. I havent figreud out a way to do that yet but I'm still thinking...

You might want to try some reflective sportsman's blankets / tarps. They are available at Cabela's online for $12.99 each. Link Here
Below is a picture. I use them on our camper tent ends, it helps tremendously.

I haven't tried it, but a buddy of mine tapes those foil emergency blankets to the rain fly on his tent. He says it works like a charm.
