Hello all! This will be my first roo and first festival for that matter. I understand that they search your car upon entry, however do they actually go through your clothes and packed things? I am a private person and my biggest fear is some strange person holding up my masive panties for all to see! I love this site it has really helped me plan for this monumental trip! Thanks and kudos for all the good info here!
There is a thread about this though I've had trouble finding it. My experience has been that no, it's not that thorough. Some of the more gung-ho personnel will give your entire car a cursory glance. Be prepared to open your coolers.
On 2 occasions, I haven't had security search anything, other than a cooler glance. They asked me if I had glass, weapons, or illegal drugs. I said no, that was it.
In 2008, police were conducting random (extremely thorough) searches of vehicles, but the security was really high that year, and I haven't seen them do that since.
In short, no, no one is going to go Sixteen Candles with your underwear in the line.
Yeah, they pretty much do it as a formality other than checking your coolers for glass. Make sure they're easily accessible in the car to avoid having to rummage around for your cooler.

I've been going since 2006 and I've never had them open my suitcase with my clothes. They have gone through the cooler, bags of food, and any loose clothes (jackets etc.), but that is about it.
Fear not for your panties unless they are being used to hide serious contraband. I'm a peaceful person but would have to beat the shit out of anyone who pulled out my granny panties and showed them to the crowd!

The cops were definitely doing it again in 2009. 1 out of every 12 or so vehicles would get waved over there. Was happy not to have to deal with any of it even though I didn't have any illegal things with me.

I was in a car that got flagged for the extra-hard-core searching, however they just took a few glances in each bag. if your worried about anything, just keep all your clothing together in one place and even in the worst case scenario they'll just take a quick look. they looked in our cooler, but didnt move anything. also they looked through a few bags which had our camping gear but all in all it only took a few minutes and wasnt overly thorough. we didn't have anything banned from roo, but a bunch of cars in line with us got caught for trying to bring glass pieces with their stuff. basically just pack smart, keep similar things together, and itl speed any search up.

I've never heard of anyone getting searched that thoroughly, and certainly haven't experienced it myself. Basically they'll glance around the inside of your car, have you pop the trunk, look through the trunk a bit, and check your cooler. Like whistlesgowhoop said, the worst case scenario is they'll unzip your bag, notice that it's full of clothes and stuff, and move on.

Yea they are mainly checking for glass bottles, anything related to fire, etc. The only reason they would delve any deeper is if there were any interesting odors or whatever coming from your luggage.

1 in about 12 searches that my car has been a part of in VIP was completely searched. In VIP you can re-enter the campsite with your vehicle as you please, but they search each time you enter. This one time the searchers were being "trained" by an old man yelling at them while searching and they did look through all the bags and my "dirty laundry/underwear" plastic bag was opened and dropped to corner of the trunk once they realized what was in their hands. They do not want to hold up your underwear for everyone to see, they don't get paid enough to search through underwear too... I got slightly embarassed but considering they didn't go any further it wasn't that bad at all.

They didn't even open my cooler last year. My search lasted less than a minute. Two stations down, the group of 4-5 people in that car were sitting on the grass next to their vehicle because they were searching the quack out of that car.
Yeah I barely got searched, I think they opened my rear driver's side door and maybe poked at a bag for half a second, nothing really, then I popped my trunk and they barely glanced in my cooler. No biggie. There was some guy with a BUNCH of stuff in the back of his truck (looked like a huge tent setup) and they were making him haul it all out, which sucked for him I'm sure as it was raining and we're talking about a LOT of stuff. But yeah, no hassling here.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ That guy eventually got in! The stuff in his back was absolutely a huge massive tent setup that he did 60 yards from my campsite!
It was great he laid down hay and big ol rugs on the inside and had a ton of couches in it for everyone. He had two projectors aimed at the ceiling with a visualizer that was synced up to a guy in there playing some crazy sitar type electric string instrument.

So far I've seen a couch and a small pool (don't ask me how the filled it). PIng Pong sounds cool
This was easily the most ridiculously comfortable camp I saw last year, and I have no idea how they managed it. There were several futons, couches, statues, rugs, just all kinds of stuff. I didn't see a ping pong table but I wouldn't be surprised.
