Hey guys,
just curious on if anyone has any tips on the best way to rent a car. It's me and my two friends trying to get to bonnaroo all the way from Philly. We're all like 22-23 years old, so generally speaking underneath the "minimum age" requirement, so they add like a $70 underage fee.
Does anyone know the best way to go/the cheapest company to use? Right now I have a few problems
- We're all underage, so we have to pay the underage fee - This means that for most companies adding another driver to the policy wouldn't work unless the driver is over 25 - Looking like it'll cost about $270 overall
Anyone know if there's a cheaper solution? Or a workaround for the over 25 issue?
The only time I have seen the age thing waived is for active duty military.
You might also try talking to your local used car dealership. Sometimes they will be willing to rent you a car on the lot. Just depends on how shady the dealership is.

It really depends on the city, the date etc. I book travel for people in my company and there is no telling. Usually Budget is the cheapest, but take a look online at National and Enterprise also, they sometimes have great rates. You can usually look online and see what the prices are. Do you have AAA? That can get you discounts sometimes.
The only way I ever got a rental car before I turned 25 was every time I wrecked my car, while they were fixing it I had 30 days of rental coverage. If one of you has good insurance and needs their car fixed maybe you could read between the lines here.
Otherwise $270 to rent a car under 25 is a good price from what I saw when I booked mine a mid or full size car was going to run me around $200 for 5 days but I found a standard SUV with enterprise for $280 for a week so now I can take my time driving with some extra cargo included.
Remember there are Fee's that you don't see in the advertised price.

I'm renting from HERTZ. Definitely read everything. Enterprise charges $0.25/mile if you go over the allotted miles they give you(we're renting from June 9-14th and they gave us 1050 miles). We have 2 people in the car over 25 and we all have AAA so we booked using the AAA website and we're getting a standard SUV(think Xterra or Escape) with unlimited miles and discounted Sirius radio for $458.07.

so hertz offers a 100% free gold membership to young renters, and once you sign up they will waive the underage fee. it's a really great deal, i use it all the time.
just sign up, you need a credit card but they won't charge you anything for the membership.
usually day-to-day rentals are much cheaper when picking up/returning at an airport (corporate) location, and weekly rentals are much cheaper when picking up/returning at a local (HLE) location. but the no underage fee is the best part.
good luck, enjoy!
Edit: also, use www.retailmenot.com and search hertz.com to find hundreds of coupon codes to use at the hertz.com website, you can often find really good deals to use along with the gold membership.

I wonder if the gold membership wont affect my AAA discount since I'm 24 but the other driver is 25. But I don't want something to happen when I'm driving the car and us getting screwed because I was listed as a driver since I'm 24
