Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
I've been reading around the forum and I feel like people are making some pretty extensive packing lists. Although depending on your idea of camping most of this stuff isn't needed. I went to bonnaroo last year and packed everything according to some of the lists I found and it was wayy more then I needed.
I saw someone on another list pack night vision goggles... really?!? are you really going to use those?
Just thought I would make a list for the minimalist like myself.
Camping: sleeping bag tent extra tarp extra pegs rope and duck tape. multi tool or swiss army knife
Personal: 2 pairs of shorts 2 tanktops 2 bathingsuits underwear 1 sweater hat sunglasses
Other: Sunscreen small flashlight reuse able water bottle baby wipes a mini bottle of body soap toothbrush/paste 4-5 trash bags a small bag or backpack (for your walmart trip) toilet paper. cups
a mp3 player w/small speaker : you would be surprised with the amount of people who go to bonnaroo without packing the essential :music! thats why we're here and if you want a party at your campsite I can promise blasting music will bring people together.
I went last year by foot and plan on doing the same thing this year. So this is a great list if you're coming with everything strapped to your back.
After I set up my tent last year I went to walmart and picked up the basics:
peanut butter bread granola bars fruit alcohol orange juice canned food.
For the shower situation, I suggest not taking one if you can avoid it, its just going to take up time waiting in line.. getting a bucket of water, and some dry shampoo should be all you need to keep you fresh Its only 4 days.. and I promise that shower on monday will feel so much sweeter ahah.
Keep in mind getting to know your neighbors can be super helpful. Other people WILL over pack. Last year we went and bought hot dogs and hamburgers in exchange for using our neighbors grill. If you are coming a long distance to bonnaroo or alone you probably dont want to carry along a ton of things. Being friendly and sharing groceries, booze, etc can get you a long way.
When I went in '07 we had minimalist campers on both sides of us. One side was a couple who had a tent, two camp chairs, and I think maybe an air mattress. They spent 99% of their time in Centeroo and seemed to have a fantastic time.
On the other side we had four guys who bought their stuff at Wal Mart - a tent, a cooler, some sleeping bags. These guys were utterly unprepared. But the difference was that this group weren't expecting such harsh conditions. They didn't bring water, they didn't have camelbaks or bottles to hold water, they didn't have any food except potato chips and crap, they didn't have an extra tarp or EZ up for shade, and they spent a decent amount of time at camp because I think they were overwhelmed by Bonnaroo.
I totally think you can go minimal. I am a relatively high maintenance woman and still am amazed by some of the getups people are planning this year for their camps. It's only 4 days, and it's not like it's 115 degrees or a monsoon. But do know, if you go minimal, don't expect your camp to be your place of R&R - it is a place to change, to sleep, a basecamp. But really, you can camp anywhere. Bonnaroo is really about what is inside that fence!
the general rule for roo (or any festival) is that once you're inside, you're on your own.
So long as you have a tent and money, you will survive. it's all the other stuff that makes it more of a pleasure than a challenge - im looking at you, EZ ups and chairs!
Things are a little easier now, since you can buy what you forgot at the general store.
Alternately, you can likely borrow from your kind neighbor for free.

Quite true. The guys that were ill-prepared for Bonnaroo napped under our EZ up, and we fed them orange slices and Gatorade when one almost passed out from the heat. I believe they also got a tarp from another camp.
Be friendly with your neighbors, they may end up saving your arse.

I'm packing the bare necessities this year. EZ UP, tent, cot, blankets, clothes, toiletries, water, camelbak. I plan on spending 18 hours a day in centeroo. I felt like last year, I spent too much time at camp organizing shit or looking for stuff that I really didn't need.

I'm guessing that walmart is walking distance from the camping areas then? how far of a walk is it? thanks!
I don't think you want to leave Bonnaroo to get provisions. There's a Wal Mart not too far away where you can stop when heading in (and many hang out at the night before the festival starts). Don't plan on leaving Roo, bring what you know you will NEED. The rest is icing, and if you are really screwed, be sure to be nice to your neighbors.

Anything, tarp/shade whatever keeps the shade under it so the sun doesn't heat up the air in the morning is perfect. Just block the sunrise and top of your tent and it's all good. A tarp will work if you rig it correctly. Reflectiveness = gross to fellow Rooseters in the morning!

Amen to that! Almost everything I'm taking aside from my camp set up, beer, and clothes goes in my backpack for Centeroo. Every year it seems I bring less and less, and I see that as a very good thing.
Tent Blanket Pillow Sunscreen Toilet Paper Beer (lots of) 3 changes of clothes 1 pair real shoes or boots 1 pair crocs 1 package energy bars 1 12 pack sprite 2 cases of water 1 ezup for shade
lol, you don't wanna do that. It's doable, but not worth missing any minute of the fest for. just come relatively prepared.
AGREED! Forgot to specify, I go to walmart BEFORE bonnaroo, going during the fest isnt really worth, I guess unless you go early morning like 8 but considering I go tto bed at 5 last year I dont think thats happening. I'm walking in form the bus station so all my cargo is on my back
What are you guys doing with electronics, as in cameras etc. Last year I brought 3 phones, a Palm Centro, Motorola Q9m, and Blackberry 8830. I work for Verizon haha, but by Friday they were already completely dead lol. We have a 20 hour car ride and I left one on the whole way. Anyway this year just bringing my usual 1 phone, and my old point and shoot camera. The cam runs on AA batts which are easy enough to pack. So the three electronic items -phone -camera -walkie talkies,
The walkie talkies (we brought them last year but lost them in the mess of our NON-minimalist overpacked car so we never used them) Anyone know if they are worth bringing?
P.S. Oh I forgot to add a simple small add, a number of gallon and quart sized ziploc bags, great for securing things like your toilet paper, camera, medicine, candy bars from excess rain. Wet toilet paper sucks! Plus they barely take any space up, they may even help with organization.

keep in mind there's a cell phone charging station by the Fuse Barn and I believe you can walk around and find outlets to use too, but I havent tried it myself as this is my 1st Roo. I'm thinking since I'm actually stayin in the Barn this year, I might already have easy access to plugs, but I heard the outside of it has been used for charging.
Walkie talkies....I forget what I heard about them. Possible interference with other people using the same channels and kind of hard to hear people on the other end. better to get ones with text message sorta functionality, i think i read.
camera...make sure you use lithium batteries. alkaline gets eaten up quick.
I definitely think taking extra ziploc bags are a great idea. I'm also even contemplating being cheap and bringing clear trash bags to sit on, turn into a makeshift poncho or just put extra trash in or to even separate dirty clothes/shoes/etc from the rest of your stuff... I already have a poncho though but am considering a picnic blanket to lay/sit on during shows.
This is my first 'roo and I am underpacking. Please tell me what are my most inexcusable omissions.

I'm thinking of bringing a really small ez up to keep the sun off of the tent.
