Very cool article. Unlike a lot of people on this board I like hearing/reading about the business side of things at Roo. I don't mind the corporate sponsorship or the rising costs. The fact that they have a profitable business model and great music is all that matters. There certainly wont be a fest without profit. I hope they make a ton and use that cash to pay for Neil Young and David Gilmour next year.
Second-tier acts often receive their standard fee or even less, and some lower-rung bands get nothing. They end up playing anyway because of the exposure.
If I had a band I'd play Roo for free in a heartbeat. Threre's so much exposure to be had from it. Even if nobody went to your set, you could still tie your band into the Bonnaroo name forever. Plus you could go to the festival for free!
The organizers have all the leverage with most bands -- they sell thousands of tickets on name recognition alone (presale) and consistently present an opportunity for exposure to 60,000+ potential live fans plus whatever other window shopping that they can drum up. Plus, the bands build up currency with Superfly for other shows that they are promoting.

This plus you would be on some bill or lineup poster...that would be amazing!

Yeah, I remember Will Hoge had a whole blog post on his website because he ended up billed really high on some bootleg tee in 05. He was in font that made him look like he was billed with the Allman Bros. It was funny but a reminder of how cool an event this is.
I think that attendance will be down but it doesn't appear to be down enough that they are trying to do anything to spur attendance. (I.e., no last minute headliner addition -- yet!)
That they just opened up more volunteer spots is a pleasant surprise -- up until that point I think that I was subconciously preparing myself for cancellation.

Say what? I had not idea.
Oh yeah, this is nothing new. Festivals have been a place for A&R people to scout out new talent. SXSW is the premiere festival for labels to go find new talent for their label. Bonnaroo is the same.
it's some of the best exposure a band can get. You instantly go from playing for 350-500 people to a few thousand that have probably never heard you. I'd do that for free.
From the ticket #'s we know that they have already sold over 60K GA tickets so when you add VIP you are closer to 65K already sold plus whatever they can sell to the last minute buyers in the last two week, I would guessimate a number near 70K this year would be likely so crowd should feel similar to 2008.
Its not surprising at all that many lower rung bands play Roo for free. I used to be big into following Ozzfest, with the leadup and everything that I now get from Bonnaroo, and I know from that that most of the lower-billed bands on that had to PAY to play on the tour.

I talked to the head security guy for which stage in 2008 (on saturday when I was camped in the front row for gogol) and he said 64,000.

He may have told you the truth as he knew it, which would be the GA count. We know that was the year that they expanded VIP to 5K and sold out VIP anyway so 64+5=69 with some change added would equal about 70K which is what Ashley Capps said in the Billboard article.
Either way I would tend to believe a direct quote from Ashley Capps in Billboard magazine over what an employee, who may a may not have access to all informaton, says at the festival.

I believe the lower rung acts have to take less money, but I didn't think the headliners would get a million each. That goes against what my brother thought and he's in the business of booking big acts.
A Thieve's Parade 2/24 Conspirator 2/26 Kevin Smith 3/11 Keller 3/17 Papadosio 3/18 JJ Grey 3/25 Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer 3/26 Toubab Krewe 3/27 O'Death 4/11 Budos Band 4/22 EOTO 4/28 Summer Camp 5/6-29 All Good
With all of the additions to GA camping this year on the new map, do you think ticket sales are actually up pretty high? I mean factor in that they reopened volunteer spots, added more camping and claimed that tickets are going fast.

You trust the people with all of the information too much.

I prefer to trust people that make guesses on the internet from their parents' basement.

I would give my left foot for my band to play at bonnaroo....and I need that foot Im a drummer! ...See you all on the farm.
Same here. Who uses the Hi-Hat pedal anyway?!?! Not to thread jack, but how would a band go about trying to get booked at Bonnaroo? My band is going to try to make that our goal next year.
