Here is all the info you need - it is available in plenty of places in TN (although we had trouble finding any in West Nashville on Thursday last year....):
In NC most Kroger grocery stores sell dry ice. Sometimes you have to ask around at the customer service desk they will get some for you. I plan to buy mine here, just because I have fears that all the places near 'roo could be sold out. And when packing you want dry ice on bottom, regular ice, THEN your food and drink, or you'll have some stuff frozen solid and other stuff not even cool.

There is no need for ice in a cooler of dry ice, so long as you have enough dry ice. We didn't use any regular ice last year in one cooler and we still had frozen water on Monday.

I went camping last weekend, and my cooler had dry ice on the bottom, then a layer of frozen beer, topped with a layer of warm beer. I ended up having to rotate frozen and warm beer every few hours. I don't know what I was doing wrong, since I had 10lbs of dry ice in a medium cooler.
First year going to Bonnaroo and first time using dry ice for it's intended purpose. I just want to make sure I got this system down right from all the different advice I got on here.
1- freeze everything you can before leaving 2- pack bottom of cooler with dry ice wrapped in a old towel or newspaper 3- cover with cardboard 4- layer with frozen bottles of water then food on top 5- have a second cooler packed with frozen bottles of water 6- rotate frozen water from dry ice cooler to second cooler to thaw 7- put fresh bottles of water in dry ice cooler to freeze
Sound right?
My questions
1- Will the dry ice freeze the fresh water bottles I put in the cooler? How long to freeze?
2- How long can I expect food to stay frozen and safe to eat with dry ice? I plan on cooking most food before leaving and freezing it so it's just heat and eat
^^^^ Your food will not stay frozen, nor will your fresh water freeze unless it is basically in direct contact with the dry ice. If you set your cooler up the way you described, you will essentially get a very nice refrigerator temperature for three to four days, depending on how efficient you are with your cooler openings and closings. Plenty cool enough to preserve whatever food you bring, but you wont make any ice.
**EDIT** Btw, my experience has been (depending on the size of your cooler) you need about 10 lbs of ice a day. I have one of the giant white Coleman 7 days, and that works out perfectly.

Thanks for the help.
one more question
So your experience says I should be safe with my plan on making some homemade chili and chicken soup and freezing it before. Last thing I want is food poisoning at Bonnaroo.

Absolutely. I take pre-cooked chicken and ground beef that I make Wed. night, and use it to cook at various point. You should be more than fine with anything that starts out frozen.

i am wondering how much dry ice i will need to buy for my cooler to last for 6 days? i have one of those 5 day coolers and for the first 3-4 days it wont really be opened since we will be driving.
i plan on having a layer of dry ice on the bottom wrapped in a towel. a layer of frozen 2L pop bottles of water on top of that followed by beer/food. any suggestions or improvements?
I also live in PA, and after some checking I found out that a lot of beer stores sell dry ice. We were going to try that, but opted to go with a 5 day cooler and large blocks of ice instead.

Make sure you have bricks not pellets. It'll last a lot longer. And don't just wrap it in a towel...wrap it in a trash bag first, then a towel.
