I've listened to the album a few times now (with the exception of You Wanna Freak Out, which cuts off at 1:41). My initial reaction is positive. Because of the Terminal 5 Evil Urges show, I was quite cynical about this material. Most of the new songs were rather boring live. I'm happy to see they scrapped Friends Again.
Overall the song writing and production on this album is much better than Evil Urges. However, some of these songs, Outta My System and First Light, are rather sluggish. Hoping this album translates well live in Louisville.
I'm interested to see how much new material they will be playing at the upcoming shows.
I really like the way Outta My System builds. Victory Dance and flows very well into Circuital, I could see those 2 getting stuck together for the live experience.
It's killing me not being able to hear all of You Wanna Freak Out, I need to know where that song goes!
I find that First Light has a neat oldies feel to it, as does The Day Is Coming. Upon further listening I've got the same feeling for Slow Slow Tune.
Today I'm working on getting to know the last two tunes, Slow Slow Tune and Movin Away.
It's definitely way different than EU and it does feel as though they tried to move back into the earlier years but some of the psychedelia has been lost in my opinion. Circuital will be just as polarizing as EU was among fans, some fans will hate this album. I love the vibe of this album and it is growing on me like a bad fungus but in a good way!
I love 100% of everything MMJ has been doing the past year. Amazing. They seem to be really picking up steam and getting the name out there
In the coming weeks of the new album, have they been featured on modern radio ITM? I would like them to finally get the recognition they deserve along with putting more quality on the airwaves.
Jim James has an appearance in the movie "I'm Not There". I thought it was awesome.
I can't f'n wait for that web broadcast! Did anybody see the live on Letterman show from sept/oct?
I believe the outro to Gideon you are speaking of is the one they've been doing since around that time, if it is you can hear it on any live version of Gideon since around that time. It's amazing.
Has anyone found a copy that has the full version of You Wanna Freak Out?

I haven't heard too much on the radio (though I don't always listen to much radio) so I can't say they've been featured on there. What I have been noticing a lot more is that they are featured with other big name acts when media websites are reporting on music festivals and upcoming albums.
They've been hired as a top level band at TONS of music festivals and have been seeing more mentions of them than usual in magazines like Rolling Stone, Spin, etc. They'll be on the cover of Relix coming out soon and were selected as one of the few bands to be part of the revival of VH1 Storytellers. Their mini-concert at the Letterman show months ago was unique and I really think they're starting to break through to the mainstream a bit more.
Good to see music magazines are giving them exposure. They have already established as touring gods with headlining spots at Voodoofest, Wakarusa. Along with major top tier spots at Hangout, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo.
I just wish for them to reach superstardom on a major scale like a Green Day or a Coldplay and they need radio play to reach that. MMJ are just too damn good to be denied.
I can't say I agree with you about wanting them to get as big as Green Day or Coldplay but I do agree that they deserve a shitload of recognition. Rolling Stone has been loving these guys for quite a few years and they've even had CNN talk about them amongst other major news/music sources. I think for them to really break through they would have to write a radio single and it would just drive me nuts to hear MMJ mixed in with top 40. I don't see them writing a radio single, I think they're just far enough off centre that they will never be fully accepted into the mainstream ala Coldplay or (shutter) Green Day.
can anyone pm the leak to me i don't trust google they have fucked my computer up before with downloads. Regardless of whether i get to hear the leak I am going to buy the album.

By no means I am endorsing them to be Coldplay or Green Day. I just don't see why Evil Urges could not have been sold as a single on radio. It's not really that off-kilter. Or Gideon for that matter on Z back in '06. They are just flat out good rock songs that don't get too artsy.

I surprised as well that they didn't get more radio play. We got a little Gideon here in Calgary when the alt-rock station started in late 06. But that didn't last. The station is still here but no MMJ. Calgary is a very top 40/country driven city so even the alt station plays Linkon Park, 3 Days Grace, Treble Charger and more crap I don't care to speak of. I'm pretty sure I was the only guy out of 1.3 million requesting MMJ. I can hear them sometimes on the University station but they are a very different station from hour to hour, could be Tame Impala, Black Angels and MMJ, or they could be playing death metal, philipino hour ect.

If someone wants to PM some love my way I'd enjoy it. Planned on looking for this after I get home.
As for MMJ "writing a radio single".....I don't think that's how most bands do it. Watching the documentary "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" turned me on to the notion that some bands (at least Wilco, in this case) honestly have no idea what makes a great "single" or "radio-friendly" tune. They explain that it takes a lot of luck to get a song that really catches on with people and get spread around.
I feel like MMJ (and other bands I like) go into the studio and just make songs. Then, after it's all said and done.....they pick from what they have to what they think will be a good single........but I don't imagine them sitting around saying "what kind of melody will get us in the top 40" or "how much should I dumb down our lyrics so we're played on the radio". I feel like they just make good music and hope for the best.

Calgary's radio choices sound alot like DC/Northern Virginia. We have rock here (both classic and modern), country is big here (WMZQ Fest is a big deal), top 40. The only deviation is the city's focus on hip-hop R&b.
You gotta love college radio and the changing format. Nothing beats hearing a transition from chic rock like Ingrid Michaelson to serious metal like Lamb of God.
