I don't know why but I feel like it's a lot cooler to make cash on merchandising than song licensing. I'm the furthest thing from a hipster but I suppose I'm starting to sound like one.
They do their share of song licensing too. Not commercials that I'm aware of but various TV shows from stuff like House last week to the background music for highlights on ESPN.

Very true. But hey, at least they haven't (yet) reached Black Keys levels of corporate whoring tho!

There's nothing wrong with what the Black Keys do.

Agreed. It's not like they make music for commercials. They make great music and people want to use it in commercials for obvious reasons (connect with our generation). Simple marketing, and why shouldn't those guys maximize their value this way? It doesn't mean they are any less dedicated to the music or anything.

I totally agree! My initial point was just that as a fan of both bands, I find it cooler and more fun to be a fan when bands think of inventive merchandise to sell rather than just licensing out tunes to everyone and everything. I cherish creativity in the marketing of bands, I guess. I love supporting my favorite bands by buying cool Leno that is unique to the band. There is absolutely nothing wrong with licensing songs, but it just seems like an easy solution, you know? Both song licensing and the selling of creative merch give extra cash to the bands, but one leaves the fan with something cool and tangible, while the other option... doesn't.

Right. Just keep in mind that the other option (licensing) usually hooks new fans who like the song and research who the band is while the merchandise option is usually only purchased by people who are already fans. Also, merchandise costs money to manufacture.....licensing a song that is already done, recorded, and released costs you nothing but gets you profit.
Agreed. I'm sure some sweet Keys merch will come in time.
And speaking of sweet merch, I need this deluxe Circuital box now. CanadaPost is threatening a strike effective Monday, so if this isn't waiting for me when I get home from work tonight, looks like it won't be here before Bonna. Fingers crossed.
There was an episode of One Tree Hill a couple of years ago called "Touch Me, I'm Going to Scream Part 1" and the song "Look at You" played during the episode.
Disclaimer that isn't completely redeeming: Sophia Bush is in my all-time top 5.
I just realized they played Circuital at the Chicago show August 17 2010. I don't remember much from that show (haha) but I do remember being amazed. Just looked back at the set list now!
My Circuital box arrived today! Hooray! Oh, shit! the two green vinyl LP's are 45 rpm! How the hell did I miss that! My turntable (Linn LP12) only plays 33 1/3! Oooh the humanity!
I don't understand how people can watch House. Isn't it the same thing every week?
It's a show about a pill popping smart ass.. What's not to like? Ha! I'm not a weekly watcher, but it's a good show. House was modeled after Sherlock Holmes which I'm a fan of.
I hope they play "Librarian" that song is brilliant, lyrically perfect.
YES!!!! THIS!!!!!
I have seen them play 3 times now and have yet to hear them play this song. Missed it at the first show (wandered off for a bit)and then they never played it at any of the other shows I went to. YOU KNOW he wrote that song about me, right?
