This is my 2nd year coming to the festival, I'm 26 and I've decided to take my 13 year brother with us this year. Last year I camped in the regular area and didn't have too many crazy, "illegal substance" type of partying campers next to me but was considering the family camping area this year. I realize it's a festival and certain issues as far as avoiding highly intoxicated, obnoxious individuals are just not possible sometimes but I'd like to try and limit it in our sleeping area. Would anyone have any suggestions as far as whether I'd be better off in the family area or main camping? My brother is mature for his age and I want him to have a great experience as he's been to a bunch of concerts already. Just wasn't sure if family was more geared to smaller children. Thanks!
First off it's a nice quiet camp that only families are there. Yes there are a lot of small children there, but there are also kids that are older brothers and sisters.
Second, the family camp is very roomy. Since bonnaroo families are a minority the space they have for them is more than enough. feel free to spread out and enjoy.
Third, It's predetermined. The family camp is a set location. There is no crap shoot as to where you'll be camped. If it's like last years map the family camp is located at POD 7. Although that POD isn't exclusive to families it's no more than a 2 minute walk from a tent. POD 7 last year was nice. There was the traditional water troughs and info-first aid tent. Plus a row of porto's. Also right next door were a lot of paid showers and a few food vendors.
You basically had everything you needed in close proximity without all of the other not so kid friendly antics. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It's just a nice sanction away from the roocrazy.

Definitely go to the family camp. Like Karen said, it has lots of room and is relatively close to Centeroo. my one gigantic piece of advice is this: MAKE SURE you get the Famiyl Camping sticker when you get to the entry booth!!! Sometimes the people up front won't know about needing the family campig sticker, and only HALF the people parking you will know about it. We have had lots of parents come to KJ and say they were turned away from the Family Camp for lack of a sticker.
Fight tooth & nail to get that sticker at the front gate if you need to.
Edit: Okay, I just read that and I feel like I have to add here that I'm not advocating violence in any way. Just make sure you get the sticker. ;p
Yeah it's really good to know where the family camp is and how to get there from the tollbooths. That way every time you get to a parking person and they try to put you in one place you can tell them "no I have to go this way"
This is a great thread! It's our first Roo, I'm taking my 13 year old son. Not sure where Pod 7 is, assuming family camping would be close to Centeroo? Does anyone know of a map online somewhere so I can get the lay of the land a bit? My 17 year old son is also going but will be in GA with his friends. Thanks!
