Last year I brought a tent, but I don't have one this year. Anyone just camp out in their car? If so... do you have any suggestions to make it bearable? Or does anyone strongly discourage the idea for some reason? Thanks a lot for any help.

I wouldn't recommend it.
If you have a truck or suv and can sleep in the back with the tailgate open/down it may not be too bad, but then there is the weather element. Throwing a canopy over the back may help a little.
I slept in the cab of my friend's large truck last year for two nights (long story). It was surprisingly comfortable, but the weather last year was fairly mild. I slept until the cab got too hot, then opened both doors and slept a little longer.
Gotta still agree with approo though; camping in a tent or outside is ideal.

I sleep in the car every year...much better than the ground or being wet IMO. You aren't going to be able to sleep past 9am, but you probably already know that. I try for 4am-9am sleep. I don't understand the space blanket thing though...wouldn't this thing make your car hotter?
I also saw a suggestion to stick a sock in your exhaust while the car was running (is this safe?) so that if you run the car with the air on it won't disturb the other campers with your exhaust fumes.

Space blankets will reflect the sun.
I jokingly posted that if someone was running their car all night with the AC on near my camp, that I would stuff a sock in the tailpipe. No this is not safe. Don't do it.
I remember hearing my first Roo in 04, that 4 people were taken to the hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning from people running their cars close to another's tent.

I find I need to run my car and sit in the air long after people have already stumbled out of their tents for the day (1pm-5pm-ish). Still, during these times, take a look around and see if your exhaust is blowing into someone's site as they are chillin and ask them if its bothering them and/or ok.

As far as the blankets go you just need to find the right combo of shade and air flow. A large tarp or canopy may be a better idea if can keep it up over the car enough.

You sit in your car with the AC on during the day?

That seems like a waste.
I ran my car for about 15 minutes last year to charge a cell phone, but there's no reason to run your car just for some AC. Go to the cinema tent or sit in a misting tent if you need to cool down.

^this. If you go ahead and resign yourself to being hot and sweaty all weekend now, it won't seem so bad. Humans have lived without AC for at least 160,000 years, mostly in hotter climates than temperate TN. 4 days won't kill ya.

It always kills me when people say they can not live in the TN heat for four days. I do it for a good portion of everyday and it is not really that bad.
air conditioning has made wimps out of all of us. I grew up in a house in Charleston, SC....think hot and humid - with no air conditioning. Never had air conditioning until I was 11 years old or so. I don't think I suffered any permanent brain damage - from that, anyway.

I had my car running at the most a hour a day. For charging phones and cameras. My exhaust pipe was facing my tent so I knew I wouldn't be bothering anyone. But I was taught to tap on the gas lightly when idling for a long time, and it never bothered anyone.

If I got a tarp to put over the SUV to block out weather and some sun, would I then be OK to sleep in the car? I know I've dealt with some awful storms in the past and would have a hard time avoiding sun if I was just lying in my car.
I have a Jeep Cherokee and I've been car camping in it for a few weeks now. I cover the windshield with a reflective winshield cover thingy, the windows with aluminum foil on the inside to make it dark, space blankets on the outside to relfect the sun and a relfective tarp over the top to also relfect the sun. I bought a battery powered fan at Wally World and hang it from my grab handle in the passenger door with a couple of shower rings. It blows outward. My Jeep, in te middle of the day, is about ten degrees cooler than the outside temp.
The batteries in the fan last 24 hours on low setting.
