Ok I made these great tent supports about a week ago but Ive been so busy I haven't had time to post on here. Since we only have a couple of days left I thought Id just post this so anyone wanting to make them had an extra day to do it.
Basically we buy the $30 canopy tent at walmart, the blue one, every year, and even last year we returned it after Roo haha. Last year it fell over a few times, namely due to that large rainstorm on Thurs. and often it almost blew away with wind. This year I had an idea.
What you need is: -10 foot PVC pipe from Home Depot, I used the 3/4" size you could use the 1" too. -simple saw, (a miter box helps cut an angle on one side of each piece, but its not needed.) -Drill and 1/4" bit. = If u also cut a small hole maybe 6" from the top of each piece you can tie the tent ropes through to hold the tent even more secure. (this part may not be needed but I think it just adds more security.)
What i thought up was to take a generic PVC pipe and make tent stakes with them. This pipe allows you to put the tent legs inside the pipe and secure the tent to the pipes. Because one end of each of the 4 parts is cut at an angle its pretty easy to knock them into the ground atleast a foot. This allows it to be pretty damn secure while allowing almost 2 feet to give the bottom of the tent legs some added bracing. Ill post pics tomorrow. These are an easy make, took me 5 min with my circular saw, and cost a whopping $1.49 to make. Id bet these would help any tent even the heavy EZ Ups. Im also bringing a rubber mallet I purchased at walmart for $1.88 in the camping aisle.
Edit: I now got the pics ofcourse its a day before half the people will leave but here goes. And yes Ive been thinking of bringing my small but very heavy metal mallet instead, its very heavy which kind of stinks but it would be worse getting there without the ability to even use them. Im also bringing a block of 2x4.
I don't think it'd work with an EZ-up because the legs on those are much wider than the wal-mart ones. We made the mistake of going cheap our first year, bought an EZ-Up, back in 04 and its still with me, but you have a pretty awesome plan.

Bring a big sledge to get those "stakes" in the ground. Usually the ground is rock hard on the farm. But I think they've had a lot of rain lately so it may be easier than normal.

Like questionablesanity said... Those $1.88 mallets won't do the trick if the ground is as hard as it usually is. I have one of those for when I go camping, but for Roo, I sledge it all the way. Also, bring a block of wood to place over the tops of the PVC while banging them in or else it can deform/break the PVC (learned that last year with my PVC flagpole "stake").

I've done something similar to hold in a temporary fence gate. I didn't cut the pipe at an angle though. I "sharpened" the edge of one end so it was like a round blade. Block of wood is almost necessary to pound on.
