Hello! This is my first Bonnaroo and I'm really excited, but I'm worried about cell phone reception. I figure it's going to be sketchy, but I only need to make one phone call on Friday around 6 or 7am to work. I have to call in ;D If I can't get my cell phone to work, do they have onsite payphones or some way for me to make an outgoing call around that time?
Cell phone reception was shaky at best in 2005. Since then, I have never had any problems (Cingular\AT&T here). You should be good to make your phone call, but just to be sure you may want to get up a little early to make sure you can secure a signal.
Only once last year did I have any problem (I have an iPhone and am on AT&T) -- during Beastie Boys set, I had trouble getting texts out.
They actually set up a temporary 3G network in Manchester for Bonnaroo - if you left the area of Roo (went a few miles away) it disappeared. Really smart for AT&T to do that, hopefully they do it again.
3/19 Portugal the Man 3/31 Japandroids 4/3 Alberta Cross/BRMC 5/1 White Rabbits 5/7 OK GO 5/14 Mumford and Sons 6/2 The National 6/10-13 Roo 8/21 MMJ and Tom Petty
Yeah, it depends on your carrier. If you have Verizon, you should have no problems getting reception. I hear the other carriers have problems sometimes, but since I've never used them, there's not much I can say on that from first-hand experience.
Last year, I feel I had a ton of problems with my iphone making calls and sending texts...not all the time, usually just after a big set on the main stage. It seemed like the network was clogged with everyone trying to find their friends. Other than that, it was fine.
so I see that people say they have no problem with cell phone reception, I was wondering if you were able to pick up a 3G signal. I am buying an iPad and was thinking of bringing it down to mess with during the day. I can use the hotspot feature on my iPhone to supply a Wi-Fi signal to the iPad. I won't need to worry about battery life since I can charge my phone in my car, as well as the iPad. I know this isn't what most people on here would care about, but it would just be something to do during the day while I am trying to cool off and just hang out at the campsite.
so... how's the 3G reception with VZW if anyone has noticed?

Just another voice chiming in, I'm on Sprint and haven't had any trouble with it. In 2007 I seem to remember it was a LITTLE shaky at time, but since then it's been fine. Up until now I haven't had a smart phone, though, so I can't vouch for 3G/data/anything.
Last few years, I've had really good reception. 07, I could barely maintain a signal to meet up with people. 06 I was phoneless, so I can't say. But 08-10, no trouble with phones (aside from my phone getting fucked by the rain on Thursday in 09, but that has nothing to do with signals).
And, yeah, Walkie Talkies are a great idea... I've brought them every year for the past 3 or so, but never end up using them lol.
^Texting is key... I've had very few successful phone conversations, auditorily speaking, in Centeroo when I'm at a show.
Oh, but yeah, Walkie Talkies... I'd imagine it'd be hard to communicate with someone via Walkie Talkie as they're front center at Gogol Bordello or something. Again, never used my Walkie Talkies I brought, mostly because it was more convenient to text.
Its interesting how mixed the feedback is... I will be live blogging at the roo with my iPad (hopefully on Verizon by Friday) and have an iPhone w/ AT&T... Im used to dropped calls with AT&T but it will be a fairly important for me to use data on my phone/iPad during the roo since I run a business and also happen to be live blogging...
Anyone have the inside scoop on what the cell tower setup will be like this year? Im assuming Verizon and AT&T will be there trying to make a solid showing to all their faithful iPhone/iPad subs this year since the competition is on now.

AHH, I did not think about that but it'd make me very happy! I've heard stories ranging from literally no service to some people having data coverage. Guess we'll see when we get there. I just want to be able to find friends if we get split up (text/BBM) and call my mom to let her know I'm alive once or twice, lol.
I would be really cautious about bringing an iPad... I understand stuff's gotta get done for work but I'd hate to see something happen to it (get stolen, wet, stepped on, whatever).
I know it's hard to disconnect for four days but I promise you guys can do it. Last year I turned my phone off Thursday afternoon and back on Monday morning, except for brief moments to find people, and I'm one of those people that can't be away from it for more than five minutes because of work. Just turn it all off if you can and enjoy the experience. (Stepping off my soapbox now...)
That being said... when I did have it on (on Verizon), the signal wasn't too bad. Had a pretty solid 3G signal. No real problems calling/texting.
obviously, it should be a technology free weekend! plus i'm roaming since i am international, I just use my iphone for pictures honestly.. I like the aps I have and stuff, but really my only concern would be to find my friends, - which i'm sure I will manage haha

Texting is still free for you. I'm with Telus and have always had a strong signal. Mind you I turn data off on my phone as soon as I cross into the US cause that costs a fortune.
