Last year heading from Albany NY to Roo we went down 81 all the way through PA, it was terrible. For many miles the lanes were cut to 1 or 2 for construction. Miles would go by with cones yet no workers. It easily added 2 hours to our 20+ hour trip. This year I checked PA website and it still lists construction but it doesnt get into many details. Anyone know if 81 is still clogged?

last year i took 81 south and didn't encounter any problems with 81 in PA. that being said i leave from philly to 81 so I only go through the southern most part of 81 in PA, so i wouldn't know of the construction problems north of that. i always expect highways in PA to have some sort of construction delays, but I haven't had a problem in the past on 81.
81 S is still pretty awful for a lot of the PA portion. I live around wilkes barre and my area is pretty alright but anywhere north of the first Wilkes-Barre exit is total chaos for 30-40 miles of nonsense construction... I dont know if it'll add 2 hours to your trip, or if theres more even further north than where I am thinking but regardless, I-81 should be avoided till at least Scranton.
Take 90 through Buffalo and head south. From Syracuse it's quicker, less distance and less monotonous. Also, you can stop at Mighty Taco in Buffalo.
That said, if you are set on taking 81 it's not terrible these days. It's been about a month since I've spent serious time on it (Syracuse to VA) but it wasn't terrible.
88 to 86 in Binghamton will also take you to 90 in the Erie, PA area if you are looking to avoid 90. Of course, then you miss out on Might Taco. (You can hit up Sonic in Binghamton, though!)
