Interesting. I just did this, take it for what its worth. Using NOAA data, new chart. It's for Nashville, but that's close enough. The old one was for Smyrna, GA (wunderground really messed me up).
However, in '07, Manchester was in the middle of a several-month long drought, so it was a dryer heat. I think '10 felt hotter due to the humidity.
That's also true. Dustaroo was a dry heat -- this was a really really humid heat. I mean, it's 10 AM in Manchester right now and the heat index is already at 100.
It was the hottest in the last 3 years. Absolutely no doubt about it. I was also on medication that's side effect was photosynthesis. So that worked out great
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
I guess this would be the best place to ask. I went to Bonnaroo in '06 & 09. In '06 i was really impressed at how well Bonnaroo was organized and such. I had a great time in 09 as well. The only issue I really had was in 09 with the water situation. Inside Bonnaroo it seemed like half the water spouts were shut off or had very little pressure. This didn't stop me from having a great weekend but it was defiantly an annoyance. How was it this year?

The heat was oppressive this year. Just plain brutal. 4 of my campsite crew bailed on Sunday because of the heat, and most of my fun had a base layer of stubborn under it. The nights were beautiful, but the days were by far the most uncomfortable for me out of all 9 years.

It was wicked hot during the days. I spend a lot of time outdoors in Florida so I didn't struggle as bad as some others but I guy in our camp had to get an IV and I saw a guy just fall right out waiting for Mumford and Sons to start, he fell right on top of my wife and knocked her down. By the time we got a medic to him and got him out of the crowd he had passed out about three more times. They got him hydrated and back on his feet but I'm sure he was hurting.

Thank God I've been working as a cart pusher for the past few months. Otherwise, I would have fallen out. Anybody else work outside and found that it helped them cope better with the heat?

Yep it was by far the worst I have experienced in the 5 years I have been there. I missed a few bands because I felt really ill and had to get into the shade and lie down (and I was constantly pounding water)

It was pretty hot on Sunday, me and a friend went in for Ingrid, then got a good seat in the shade for Martin Sexton so that was ok. Afterwards we met kdogg and crazykitten for Regina, and got under the mist tent. I did have to go listen to Fogerty in camp, and give Ween a miss though.
Ween was a bit rough, I got up near the front at the end of the previous show and had to stand packed in like sardines for an hour before they started. The sun was incredibly hot and the tight crowd around me surely elevated the temperature. I don't know if I could have made it for very long if there hadn't been several people around me spraying everyone around them with spray bottles (and the occasional cold spray from someone in the pit behind the rail). Ween looked like they were about to pass out from the heat heh.

All weekend I thought it was hot, but Thursday was just about getting used to no air conditioning for me. By Friday, even though it apparently was hotter I felt a little better and found relief in the form of tons of lemonade (which I also did on Saturday). Thank God for the light rain during the Avett Brothers on Saturday, and the fact that it got dark shortly thereafter.
On Sunday, things started to get really serious. It was obviously the hottest day of the festival (sharp contrast from last year's cool and overcast Sunday). I even started breaking out the umbrella for a little self-made shade that seemed to be working a bit, but then I started to feel sick.
During John Fogerty, I started to feel like a rotisserie chicken - my skin felt tight and crispy (despite lots of sunscreen) and my insides felt like they were cooking (despite tons of water intake). Just like when you get sick and have a fever, my cheeks felt tight and I got the chills. I realized I had stopped sweating (I had been monitoring that all day in regards to a henna tattoo I got on my chest that morning). Then, I started to panic because nothing I tried was cooling me down. I got my boyfriend to leave for the Dropkick Murphys show early, so we could find some shade under This Tent. I guess he realized the distress I was in because he made us stop and buy some fresh, ice cold water and the lady at the beer tent kindly sprayed me down with a squirt bottle. Once we were in the shade I realized I was super dizzy, so I sat down for a little bit and drank that cold water. After awhile I started feeling a lot better and was able to enjoy the show and the rest of the night.
My boyfriend probably thought I was just complaining at first. I felt that way at first too, because I knew everyone was hot - it wasn't just me. But in light of what happened to one of our own over the weekend, I realize that things could have gotten much worse had we stayed and I'm glad we made the right decision to remedy the situation instead of riding it out.
That happened to me, and I was so careful to wear appropriate clothing and wear sunscreen and drink nothing but water, lemonade and Gatorade all weekend. Plus I keep a low body temperature naturally because of a low metabolism. I can't imagine all those people who drank beer all weekend and used other substances that could have seriously altered their bodies' ability to keep cool.
I guess this is just a loooong post to simply agree that the heat was super oppressive this year. By the end of Sunday I wanted to never see the sun again.
the heat for sure hindered my experience this year. i am from south texas and it as been 90degrees for the past month here and i have to say that i was miserable. on sunday i went to aziz at 1:30 and when that was done, it was like a 4 1/2hr gap until the people i wanted to see next. i ended up leaving early b/c i just couldn't hack it. luckily i had seen the two bands i wanted to see before, so it wasn't a HUGE loss.
all i was able to consist on the whole wknd was lemonades, water and snowcones. i maybe had 3 full meals the whole time b/c everytime i put hot food in my mouth, i wanted to throw it up. yuck. (also, very attractive. haha)
i def think they should put up large umbrellas in the fields during the day that can be put down at night. it is no secret the heat is dangerous and i feel like it is the organizers and vendors' responsibility to take care of the patrons.
In fairness there is plenty of shade at Bonnaroo. There was room under the tents for most of the tent shows, and then there are all the smaller tents and even airconditioned sponsor tents that you can go into if you need a break. You may have to miss your favorite acts at the What or Which stage, but they can't possibly provide shade over those entire huge areas.
no def not the ENTIRE area, that would be ridiculous, but the fact that every single shade spot you see has eight million people crowded underneath it, shows a need for more. also, being underneath a packed tent may provide shade, but that doesn't mean the temp will go down that much when you are shoved up against a bunch of sweaty people.
I say implant some of the trees from the surroinding area. That is not beyond the realm of reason. That would not only provide shade but keep the crowd thinner from the front.
