On Friday morning I woke up in a tent filled with car exhaust. My neighbour had decided that she would take a nap in her a/c, not having enough sense to know that it was a bad idea when my tent was right behind her car. I had my fan running too, perfectly positioned to pull the exhaust into my tent. If the heat hadn't woken me up when it did, I may not have ever woken up. They would have found my body in my tent Monday morning and Inforoosters would be discussing how tragic it was.
It was terrifying. I felt okay, but walked to the medical tent anyway to be sure. By the time I got there, it had really hit me and my anxiety was so high my heart rate was 159. This experience made The Flaming Lip's performance of Do You Realize rather hard hitting.
I know most Inforoosters know the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, but please remember to look out for your neighbours too and educate people if you see them doing something like this.

I shouldn't still be amazed at the rampant stupidity out there but somehow I still am. Sorry you had to share oxygen with a total moron. Glad you are OK.

Yeah seriously, glad you are ok. Carbon monoxide poisoning is no joke, you might be wise to even follow up with a family doc to make sure you haven't received long term side effects. i used to work at a big rubbermaid warehouse and for a solid week i kept getting sicker and sicker as were my coworkers, one of which was complaining about going home and passing out all day long unable to wake up and that it was getting worse. none of the supervisors would listen to us and they just kept saying it was just a cold going around. i went to the hospital immediately after and got tested. turned up positive for poisoning. double checked my car and home to make sure it wasn't that and reported the incident to my employer, they checked it out, and it turned out the heating system had a malfunction and we were all being exposed to many many fold over the parts per million that is safe of carbon monoxide. goes to show you a little education can mean life or death. really glad you are ok, sorry you woke up to that.
I totally helped her set up her mixed up tent too, and later, walked her to the med tent after she stabbed herself in the thigh. She was trying to cut a watermelon and pulling the knife towards her body in a classic boy scout no-no. She totally lost control of the knife and is lucky she didn't cut herself deep enough to reach a major vessel.
She apologised to me, but I don't think she understood the gravity of the situation. Had I done something so stupidly dangerous, I surely would have shed some tears and profusely apologised. She just apologised and moved on this frighteningly naive way.

This is a serious problem at Roo and should have serious awareness raised about this issue. If you must run your car make sure it's not sending exhaust into someones tent. If you're a camper make sure you don't position your tent where someones exhaust is directing into your tent. And make sure you have some form of ventillation in your tent. Bonnaroo how about some signs and spots on the jumbo screen about this?
Unfortunately someone's going to have to die before anything is done.
this does seem to be something that they need to mention in their emails nearer to next roo. i was resting a couple of times and one neighbor or the other had their AC on. had i not been on the ground i think it would have been fine but the exhuast was hitting me sort of in the face. i also thought this was hard on your engine if you do it for hours which these people did? was that only in old cars and not in newer cars?

^that's an old car thing. I'm against the car a/c nap for more than just energy waste and pollution and danger to your neighbors. When you're out in hot conditions like we were, a/c for a few minutes is just temporary relief. In my experience it's just better to soldier through it, stay in shade as much as you can and keep yourself overhydrated. If you're sweating bullets and still have to pee a lot because you're being an h2o junkie, that's a good thing. 15 mins of AC just makes it feel worse for the rest of the day.
I never ever put my tent near anyone's exhaust. When setting up camp, it's important to plan accordingly. In order for it to be a serious concern, you'd have to have to be really close, too. And if I were that close, I'd be more concerned about being run over than inhaling car exhaust.
I had to move my tent by order of the horsey cops... There wasn't anywhere else to put it except next to someone's exhaust. There was only so much room between the cars and the fence and we had to keep a fire lane open. I originally had it further away.
our neighbors spent hours at a time in their car because it was rented they said they didnt care what happened to it...makes sense right?? anyway...their exhaust was pointed straight at our camp and it really sucked...wasnt when we were sleeping but it still was horrible...also the heat that came off of it was ridiculous...made it unbearably hot
the guy behind us was courteous enough to bring his home speakers and set them up on his hood...blaring kings of leon at about 800 am on fri morning...prior to passing out in his car for a nice, nauseating nap.
