I'm coming from pennsylvania and I'm somewhat familiar with the area (went last year). Last year we followed the mapquest directions which had us going to knoxville and then basically cutting across 40 and shooting down 55...we sort of got lost a couple times on some back roads but we eventually made it there and after a bunch of crazy maneuvering found ourselves in line. I don't remember how we got off of 55 since we were coming from the north, but we were definitely in line on I-24 after all was said and done (we took exit 111 or 112 i believe). Needless to say, we got a GREAT campsite, but I'm a little scared to take that route again this year because it doesn't seem like you can get in line from rt. 55 (coming from the north) very easily. Anyway, my question is this: should we pass through knoxville and go south to chatanooga, then come up on I-24? Or is it safer than I think to take 55 south?

i dunno, id advise against getting on 75 S...
last year we took 81 S to 40 W.. stayed on 40 W until Rt. 111 (i think its around exit 290)... 111 turns into 70 S around Sparta... 70 S starts going west around mcminnville, get on 55 S... from there, a half hour and youre at roo...
cuts off alot of mileage/crappy highway traffic and its actually a nice drive thru tennessee back country.
i actually think i got these directions from someone either here or at teh old discussion group board

that sounds pretty solid now that i'm looking at an atlas... but i'll have to ask my travel partner which one she would prefer.
does 70/55 S have alot of speed traps? or is I-24 more succeptible to that?
