From what I've researched, under trees are where the large masses of cicadas will group, and their daytime mating call can exceed 120 decibels. Guess what a loud rock concert rates? 115 decibels! So the cicada song, coming just feet away from the daytime acts, will be approximately 4 times louder than the bands!
If any of the above reasoning is wrong, please rebut it and make us feel better!
no....+6 decibels is actual doubling and perceived loudness doubles every +10 decibels. I have no idea how you got 4x louder. whatever new station you heard this off of, it mistakenly figured for just acoustic intensity (+3dB for doubling), and therefor almost 6 decibels could equal 4x.... but then it gets difficult trying to compare a finely tuned PA to a nebulous army of buzzing insects. they also merged two different types of SPL "weighting". environmental sounds are measured primarily in A weight, while concerts are measured in C weight (usually). A weight starts to drastically filter out anything below 1KH, while C weight accounts for these proportionately to human perception. but what A weight does is slightly boost between 1.6KH and 6KH, which is exactly where the cicada buzz lies.
so basically you wouldn't ever need to worry about even the loudest cicada buzz drowning out a PA suited for a 100k person outdoor concert.

i was doing some landscaping, and they are def coming. when i dug up a little trench there were some already alive and crawling just didnt have wings and there were some larvas. i would say another 1-2 weeks.
Look for them to start emerging from the ground and climbing trees around May 10, according to Belmont University biology professor Steve Murphree, who has been taking soil temperatures. It takes several nights for them to fully emerge. They last four to five weeks.

Well, if they start to emerge around May 10 as expected, and last 4-6 weeks, most should be dead by the time Bonnaroo starts. A girl can hope and pray anyway.

In Iowa, I think all we ever get are the seven year cicadas. Dunno if the 13 or 17 year ones make it up there. They were just loud back home. Never ungodly thick, but you could always find a few on the closest tree.
DUnno if I want to eat them, however. But fried, wrapped in bacon, and dipped in chocolate could make everything OK. Add some protein to that delicious salty dessert.
a few years ago in iowa we had a few million of these fuckers flying around our house. was nuts. driving was awesome because you would hit 10 every second..
tennis rackets allowed at roo? you can have fun with one of those things
I haven't heard any yet, but I think it's a bit early for them to be in that stage. My wife's girlfriend said she moved a board near her dad's barn that hadn't moved in a long time, and she found tons of larvae underneath.
really? haven't heard any yet. honestly i'm most nervous about my dog's reaction. he is a chihuahua and terrified of insects so taking him out should be interesting.
I have my electric bug zapper rackets ready for these suckers. We have a big tree in our front yard. I will inspect it this weekend (while holding my racket).

Oh, now that's something I hadn't considered... Roxie(the dog) usually spends her days outside while I'm at work. Guess I'll just have to wait and see what her opinion is of the little buggers.
