Today at the chiropractor,he commented on my Sanuk flip flops and said he had khaki shoes. He said he recommends them to his clients and that they're the best shoes ever.I concur!
This thread is beautiful. My sister and I both just got a pair of Sanuks. They are so very comfy.
About the sizing- according to their website (how many inches your foot is) I'd wear an 11. I ordered a 10 thinking I'd never fit into an 11, and sure enough, even the 10 was too big. The 9s I exchanged them for fit perfectly. I'm usually a 9.5-10. Also, my CarpeDMs are a tiny bit wider than my sister's June Bugs. Hope that helps someone.
Try Amazon. We paid about $33 a piece with free shipping. (Moms, dads and other caregivers- sign up for Amazon Mom to get free prime shipping )
Apparently Sanuk has decided to turn their backs on the Matt's Trees foundation - which they initially said they would be donating a share of the profits to, in addition to reneging on the Bonnaroo booth that was supposed to also donate to Matt's Trees. I just wrote them an email expressing my displeasure (as seen below) and I urge you to do the same: customercare@sanuk.com
To whom it may concern,
Hello, my name is Adam Wolf, and I was a friend to Matt Sloan before he tragically passed away at Bonnaroo last year. I followed with an interested eye the efforts of the Inforoo crowd in contacting Sanuk and the good news that you guys were designing and releasing a sandal in his memory. After all, he relentlessly marketed Sanuks for you to the Inforoo and Bonnaroo crowds. Many of us had never even heard of the Sanuk brand before and now many of us proudly wear them. What is not so proud, however, is the manner in which Sanuk has recently chosen to treat this matter. There had been some promises made about how Sanuk would be donating a share of their profits to the Matt’s Trees foundation (set up in Matt’s honor) and even that there would be a Sanuk booth at Bonnaroo that would donate some of its profits to Matt’s Trees. Now I hear that the Sanuk company is fully reneging on both of those offers. Despite the likelihood that Sanuk has and will prosper at least in part because of the sandal created to honor Matt’s memory, you have chosen to greedily keep all of those profits to yourself and essentially negate any good image you might have garnered in the eyes of those who were aware of this situation. Unless I hear otherwise about the outcome of this very sad turn of events, I promise to do my best to DISCREDIT Sanuk in the future, and I certainly will not support a company that profits off of the death of others, and the loving devotion of their friends who remain on this earth, without spreading the love to good causes. I hope someone in your corporation with some good sense realizes the error of their ways and turns this situation around, leading in the interest of not only gathering money but gathering devoted customers with good feelings about a good company. I sincerely hope this is the case. Please reconsider.
Matt's mom had told me that Sanuk wasn't going to be at roo a few weeks ago. She said that Sanuk asked Roo to lower the vendor fee for them, and Bonnaroo wouldn't. Of course, this is all second-hand info.
At first I was disappointed that Sanuk wouldn't be there, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that Bonnaroo probably doesn't want to be associated with Matt's death any more than the have to be. (They also didn't want press/media coverage when we planted Matt's tree at the farm) It's understandable from a PR angle, as much as we may not like it. But I'm sure they would welcome Sanuk if they could pay the vendor fee... but I doubt they would make a special exception for them. Bonnaroo is still a business.
The best thing we can all do is honor Matt in our own way. We had discussed handing out bottles of water with custom labels for free at Bonnaroo. Does anyone still want to do that? I will chip in some money to pay for it all if someone will spear-head the effort.
I'd still like to hear the full story/details about this situation.
Yeah I agree with ITM, not having a booth at Bonnaroo is ceratinly one thing, however they even said on the inserts for my carpe DM's that part of the profits were going to Matt's Trees, that is why I bought them from the site instead of a half off place.

Are you sure the insert says that? I don't remember hearing that from Sanuk....
Sure, I don't know the whole situation. I saw this post on Facebook by "Matt Sloan" and responded to it aggressively:
Sanuk has decided NOT to make a donation to Matt's Trees, even though they are making a ton of $$$ from the sale of Carpe DM Sanuks...nor are they going to have a booth at Bonnaroo (they were supposed to donate a portion of those sales to Trees)...SO....if you're not happy to hear this, please express your displeasure! Write to customercare@sanuk.com... let them hear us!
While I don't necessarily blame them for not wanting to shell out ten grand or whatever to have a booth up at Bonnaroo, doesn't it seem to anyone else like Sanuk is essentially profiting off of his death if they donate NOTHING to Matt's Trees? Sure, they honored his memory by making a sandal for him, which is more than any of us can claim, but the fact is that they SELL these sandals and KEEP all the profits. It wouldn't even bother me if they donated $1000 and made $100,000 off the Matt Sloan sandals, at least they would be making the effort to not look like your average blood-sucking corporate entity. Donations are tax-deductible for Jebus's sake.
I'll play devil's advocate here: Sanuk is a business. They did a great thing by listening to us and honoring Matt by naming a shoe after him. HOWEVER, they named the shoe after a design that was already going to be in production. They would be making money off of this shoe even if it wasn't named after Matt. I personally don't see this as "profiting" off of someone's death; I see this as a great way to honor someone that loved your company's products.
I don't know Sanuk's structure situation, but I'm pretty sure that a donation would have to be approved by a board of some sort, especially if it was a large donation. So it's necessarily one person that makes that decision; and certainly not the person that receives the customer comments e-mail. You have the right to be upset with Sanuk if you wish, and you can send them an e-mail.
I would rather we focus on raising awareness and money for Matt's Trees on our own and as a board.
I understand not having a booth at Bonnaroo and I did not see on the insert about donating profits to Matt's Trees, but I know I read that somewhere and I can not remember for the life of me where I heard that Sanuks was donating a portion of proceeds to Matt's Trees. I thought I read that somewhere. Either way, seems like they said it. If Sanuks did say a portion of profits from sales, not just Bonnaroo sales, would be donated to Matt's Trees and now they are reneging on that, shame on them. Shame on them! If they never said it and it was just assumed, than Sanuks has done nothing wrong. I hope this does not leave a stain the amazing efforts of humanity, which have spawned from such a tragic loss.
EDIT:" I agree with you JHO, Saunks is not "profiting off of someone's death", they renamed a shoe that was already in production. yes we all bought the shoes. I got a couple of pair. I also got a 70% discount, for which all I had to do is donate $20 to another foundation. I think many of us got the 70% off, so I am not convinced they have made a ton of money off of us.
Ok, I play the devil's advocate all the time, no harm no foul. HOWever, I think I can justly argue that a lot of people bought Sanuks because they were named after Matt. Therefore, while the company would have made money regardless of what they named the design, a bunch of US bought them because of our emotional ties to the situation. Perhaps some of us even bought them with the expectation that a portion of our money would then be rerouted to Matt's Trees, and now we find out that it is not. They've decided to just go ahead and keep it.
I realize that one person doesn't make the decisions for the whole company (probably) and I have little doubt in my mind that the person who takes care of incoming email has nothing to do with the money processes. I don't think my email was unfair at all to the poor sap who sits there and reads the emails all day. I called for action higher-up, I was polite, and appealed to sensibility. As much as I doubt that the person reading the email has any power, I also have my doubts that the emails never get farther than that person. I can appreciate the gesture of naming the sandal after Matt, I just feel like somewhere along the line someone decided to pull a fast one and said "eh, let's go ahead and just forget about this group, after all we named a whole SHOE after the guy". I mean, let's face it, the fact that his name is on a sandal benefits almost no one except those of us that knew him. I just feel like Matt's Trees is getting duped and it sucks. I would go so far as to say that MOST companies that would make a gesture like that would follow up with a donation, because how does it really HELP anyone otherwise? And last of all, I'm not just pulling this out of thin air, they said they were going to donate and now they aren't donating. That's my main beef.

I'm going to say with 98% certainly they never said anything about a portion of the proceeds going torwards Matt's Trees.
Rachel did say Sanuk was going to TRY to make a donation... and I'm guessing that didn't work out. Please be aware they can pick and choose what organizations they donate to.

Great points. I totally agree they are a business and would have been making this shoe anyway.
But I would like to also play devil's advocate and point out that MANY people have bought sanuks because of Matt and then many more bought the Sanuks dedicated to Matt.......all because of the honor and memory and not because of the style or design.
Either way.......I don't know the full situation. It'd be nice to hear an official word from the company though.

On the official blog post about the shoes they don't say they will donate but they do provide information. It says:
If you would like to help to carry out Matt’s legacy, donations may be made to St. Andrew’s on-the-Sound, 101 Airlie Road, Wilmington, NC 28403. Please designate to ‘Matt’s Trees’. We here at Sanuk are looking forward to the release of Matt’s model. We hopes to do justice to such an influential, positive and compassionate figure who has made others better because he cared.

It seems a little bizarre to me that all of us AND Matt's mom (or whoever is in control of his Facebook page) would think that Sanuk stated that they were going to make a donation if they didn't. Seems a little too strong of a coincidence to me.
In the same vein, let me remind all of you that this is (I presume) either Matt's mom or another of his family who are urging us to action in this matter - not just me. They are the one who initially posted that message on Facebook about Sanuk reneging on donations, I didn't pull that completely out of my ass.
^^ NO worries, wolfaroo. If anyone else wants to discuss this, please send me a PM.
Also, if anyone wants to help us distribute water at Bonnaroo, in the name of Matt, let me know! I need some help designing the label, and of course, we'll need bottle water donations.

I know I'm new around here, but I'm a designer. I'd be happy to donate label artwork, I think this is a great endeavor and a great tribute. Totally understand if you'd rather have someone do it who's been around longer or knew Matt personally, but just wanted to say I'm happy to help. I'll be equally happy to bring a spare case of water to donate.
Excellent news tonight...Sanuk has decided to make a $1,000 donation to Matt's Trees! So all of you who bought "his" shoes can feel like you had a little part in this contribution---and those of you who haven't gotten your Carpe DM's yet, get out there and buy them! WHOO-HOO!
