Ever been to a show where the opening act was better than the band you came to see? I know it does not happen often. I usually want the opener to get the f@ck off the stage so I can see who I paid good money for.
But occasionally you get a surprise.
1. Iron Maiden >>>>> 38 Special-a loooong time ago. No one knew who Iron Maiden was.
2. Stevie Ray Vaughan >>>>> BB King-on a river boat in New Orleans during the Jazz Fest.
3. Annie Lenox >>>>> Sting-my first realization that Sting is a d!ck
5. The Avett Brothers>>>>>Spoon-they were insane, breaking strings and screaming. Loved them at first sight.
Ah. When I saw Aerosmith, Lenny Kravitz opened, and while his set was good and introduced me to Trombone Shorty's talent, the Aerosmith show was everything I could've hoped for from them. It was mostly the 70s stuf, but they did do some solo Joe Perry, which sucks.
Especially if it's hers... I do want to see her in concert again, in all seriousness. I have a feeling they're going to take off fairly well inthe mainstream ... call it a hunch.
actually it happens pretty often. i've went to numerous shows just to see the opening band. but i guess more in the spirit of the thread, i can't think of a time where an opening band i didn't know/like before outperformed a headliner that i went to see.

Franti >>>>>>>Blues Traveler Trey>>>>>Tom Petty NOMO >>>>>Karl Denson Foo Fighters >>>>>>RHCP No Doubt >>>>>GooGoo Dolls >>>>>Bush (waaaaay back in the day) If I looked back through ticket stubs, I could come back with several more.
DMB always has amazing openers.
I saw the Roots open for 311 and it was one of the worst performances Ive ever seen. However, I saw the Roots again at Hangout and was blown away by their energy.

The Silver Beets are a Japanese Beatles cover band. And they were amazing. The Killers actually put on a very good, high-energy performance, but all anyone could talk about afterward was The Silver Beets.
haha, this is my other one! RHCP Californication tour, summer of 99. The Foo Fighters had Peter Frampton come out and they all played "Show me the Way". I'll take Mr. Grohl and Mr. Frampton over Flea wearing a sock anyday.

there was also an unknown brittish band called muse on that tour. i regret very much not going to that show.
Let's see off the top of my head without goin' through all my ticket stubbs:
dredg > Chevelle dredg > Deftones Opiate for the Masses > Filter Opiate for the Masses > The Used (granted I went to see OFM and hate The Used) The Apex Theory > Alien Ant Farm Incubus > 311 30 Seconds To Mars > Our Lady Peace Fingertight > Spineshank Hoobastank > All American Rejects Tub Ring > Mindless Self Indulgence (also went fer TR and hate MSI) Zebrahead > (I think) Real Big Fish
This doesn't really fit the definition of the thread but i saw Neil Young back in 09 with Everest >> Death Cab for Cutie opening.
Everest was absolutely outstanding and everybody was dancing and having fun. Death Cab for Cutie was really boring. All the rusties I talked to felt this way too. In fact the only people I saw enjoying Death Cab left when they were done and skipped Neil. So obviously their musical opinion doesn't count.
