I had a great time Saturday and Sunday at the Louisville waterfront... Forecastle did a lot of things right.
The portal potties were very nice, the lineup was amazing with few conflicts and the best bands all playing all day on the main stage. Security was pretty loose ... water was pretty accessible (they handed out water bottles saturday).
It was cool that the VIP viewing section only took up the left side of the stage so we could still get up to the front row.
Saturday's day was IMO better than any day at Bonnaroo. Don't get me wrong, bonnaroo was definitely funner overall... but the music, starting with Umphrey's Mcgee at 215 to Smashing Pumpkins ending around 1, was awesome! I had no idea what I was in for with the Devo set and Cake/Bassnectar were, as expected, some classic shows.
I'm still not sure what to think about the Smashing Pumpkins set. The entire time I was trying and failing to figure out if Billy Corgan was having any fun or not... but he definitely rocked out. It was a pretty intense set and I'd be pretty excited if they were at roo next year, although I heard a lot of people that were saying they were dissapointed. The bass was pathetic compared to Bassnectar, who was awesome and right before them.... don't really understand why he doesn't get a good bass player if he's going to change the lineup so often.
Flaming Lips were a much better show for me than at Roo because it was much easier to get close to the stage. They played basically the same set .... although included the one song I wanted to see they didn't play at roo (In the Morning of the Magicians). There was definitely a lot of stuff I noticed about the songs I had already seen though that I missed at bonnaroo. Spoon before them was great and would be good on the farm next year too.
Overall I definitely recommend going next year... hopefully they had a good enough turnout to bring it back again like this and MMJ would definitely be due for another hometown show on the lawn.

^ Agreed. Widespread on Friday was insane too. I liked this festival bc it seemed like you could walk right up to the stage at any time. Very small scale compared to Broo, but in my opinion had better vendors, porta potties, and seemed like everyone was there for the music. Saw some really good bands I had never heard of. I was a little disappointed in Smashing Pumpkins, but what can you expect for only having 1 original member? I was pretty upset they quit selling tickets so early, no tickets = no beer
I really liked Forecastle also. It's about a tenth of the size of Bonnaroo, and it was easy to get close to any of the stages.
Highlights for me were Widespread Panic on Friday, Umphrey's McGee, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, CAKE, and DEVO on Saturday, and Papadosio and BoomBox on Sunday.
In the emperor's new clothes department, I really didn't care much for Drive By Truckers and EOTO. Not sure how either of those bands have attracted fans.
The Ocean Stage is like a much smaller version of Bonnaroo's Lunar Stage. We had an awesome time dancing there. If you get a chance to see Papadosio, a four-year-old jam dance band from Athens, OH, do it - they are AMAZING.

Really, you don't like EOTO. I not that into dubstep, but they're talent is insane. All of what they do onstage is improv.
I agree about Papadosio. They play here locally quite often and they're pretty damn good. They'll be opening for tDB on the upcoming tour. I'm glad that people are taking notice of what these kids are doing.
A Thieve's Parade 2/24 Conspirator 2/26 Kevin Smith 3/11 Keller 3/17 Papadosio 3/18 JJ Grey 3/25 Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer 3/26 Toubab Krewe 3/27 O'Death 4/11 Budos Band 4/22 EOTO 4/28 Summer Camp 5/6-29 All Good
The connection to SCI, the improvisational nature of the music, and a quick listen to a couple of the songs on their album convinced me to prioritize EOTO above The Smashing Pumpkins, but I was sorely disappointed by the live show. I found it to be mind-numbingly repetitive and technically unimpressive. No comparison to Papadosio and BoomBox, which also improvise in that electronic club music space but do so with creativity and skill.
Maybe they were off their game Saturday night, and maybe I'm just missing the neural circuit that would enable me to appreciate what they're doing, but for whatever reason it didn't work for me, and it did so in such a clear and obvious way that I doubt I will try again.
