I looked high and low for a thread about this and didn't find one, so if there is already one out there and I couldn't find it, I apologize. Anyway...this thread will be exactly what the thread title says it is! A place to teach people about your favorite bands that are from your area! There are no rules--they can be major label, independent label, no label, just as long as they're from the area you call home.
Also, it would make more sense to post stuff from artists that people aren't likely to already know, so for example, if you're from Athens, it wouldn't make much sense to post "Radio Free Europe" by R.E.M. in this thread; it's a great song, without a doubt, but it doesn't make much sense for a thread about local music. So, here are a few bands from "The Triangle"--Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill, NC:
First, The Spider Bags from Durham, quite possibly my favorite local band. Unfortunately their live show is much different and exponentially better than their records, but anyway:
Second, Megafaun from Raleigh, who are on Hometapes, the same record label as Bear in Heaven. Brad used to work with me here at the store, and he is the one who introduced me to The Basement Tapes, which I immediately became obsessed with (Megafaun does a cover of "Ain't No More Cain" live):
Third, Ryan Gustafson, a rising talent from Chapel Hill. He is part of something known as The Drughorse Collective that has become something of a local legend of late. It is just a collective of musicians that all play in each other's bands (like all collectives) and make a bunch of similar music, music that people around here are really into. The biggest band be affiliated with it is The Love Language, who are signed to Merge Records, and have a huge fanbase in the area (while maybe not nationally). Another rising band out of that collective, The Light Pines, features Gustafson on bass.
The Florence/Muscle Shoals area of Northwest Alabama has always had its share of Hit music, tons of big name artists have recorded here (such as the stones, bob dylan, staple singers, etc). But we also have a pretty nice scene of bands now.. Here are a few of the ones like:
(I made all the videos unless noted)
Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit (used to be in Drive by Truckers)
(not my vid)
Lauderdale
Sons of Roswell (have played sonic stage at roo with a diff lead singer)
Planet Ink
Pine Hill Haints
Fiddleworms (Guitarist was in DBT)
Boombox (tour a whole bunch and play lots of fests)
Grown Folks Band
Can't forget about.. Drive By Truckers.. we claim em too!
There are a whole bunch more.. but i dont have vids for
Caught these guys at Exit Inn. It sold out because it was rumored KOL were going to show. Sad.
The Features:
I've heard of this band and I really like them. They played in Evansville about a month ago with Heypenny but I wasn't able to go.
There is one decent local band in this god forsaken, soul sucking part of the country. Namaste is from Evansville, IN. They play original music and they're a jam band (both are oddities around here).
Manchester Orchestra Atlanta, GA (Their bassist rocks and can hit the Leno out of a baseball.)
Ha, where's that baseball background from? I saw them maybe like 3ish years ago and the bassist was wearing a Harry Carey mask (it was in Chicago.) Some guy next to us said "I think he's wearing a Dick Cheney mask!"
