I'm sorry to make a new thread for this, but am I the only person who is praying that Bono won't weasel his way onto the farm?
I know from the business perspective it makes a lot of sense to AC/Superfly, but I feel like having U2 as a headliner would only strengthen the feelings I've had on and off recently about Bonnaroo's choice of headliner direction: safe, artistically mediocre figureheads of an outdated form of anthem rock that seems completely outdated.
I can dig some U2 tracks, but seriously, it almost seems like it would be a waste of a headliner slot.

I am pretty much on the fence, I kind of place them where I did Bruce. Glad they are there and feel it they are a perfectly reasonable choice as headliner, but if I am tired it will be naptime.
They're far from the top of my list but I dig their earlier stuff quite a bit, and after KOL, U2 sounds fine to me. Like them or not, they have an amazing show and they sound spot on. They would make so many people so happy.

agreed. But they need to go ahead and commit to doing it so they can cancel and we get Gorillaz.
Ok, I think U2 makes quite a bit of sense for Bonnaroo in 2011. They haven't played a festival in 20+ years, but they are one of (if not 'the') biggest bands in the world. After canceling the American leg of their tour this past summer, they will be touring primarily in the states, early next summer. They have an opening of 10 days in June, seems like we will be getting them.
I am nervous about the price tag for U2 and I know they mean no Radiohead. So are there other headliners I would like 'instead' of U2? Yes. Will I be incredibly excited to see them live? Yes

I am a music lover in any form but live shows are the only way to feel the music and truly appreciate and love it. There are some bands that HAVE to be seen live to see what makes them so great. Live and with no media interference. I believe U2 to be one of those bands. Just like The Boss they are iconic. They truly love their audience and sharing the music and that vibe is what Bonnaroo is all about!!

^Agreed. Bruce was fun after going to the camp to get good and ready for NIN and MGMT. Hoping to NOT see them on the list, but not going to be a deal breaker either.
U2 have done great things in music, but Bonnaroo could do way better for itself to celebrate it's 10th - if it wants to distinguish itself as a unique, progressive festival. If it wants to be predictable as all hell, and play follow the leader (ie glastonbury last year), then go ahead and bring U2.
So basically, U2 will probably be there...
but for the love of god, can we please have Radiohead instead???
I saw them last year. I really wish I appreciated them more when I did. I've grown to like them a lot more since then. It was a total last minute thing because my friend called me the morning of with an extra ticket and my favorite band in Muse was opening so I went. U2 put on a great show though. Would gladly see again.
one of those things that I didn't know a lot of the material super well (besides the super hits) so I don't remember all of it quite as well as one of the concerts for one of the bands I like more, but if I saw them again I'd know them better
Good to see you back round here lakai. I always loved The Edge's tones. That Bullet The Blue Sky solo is spine tingling (in a good way), but I can't comment on his toolishness.
I just recently saw that movie It Might Get Loud and it was pretty awesome, The Edge is such a tool though. I'd really rather them not headline.
that movie was awesome. but yeah, i kind of felt like it was "Jack White and Jimmy Page have a conversation on guitars while the Edge kind of sits around and tries to butt-in occasionally"

Thanks! I won't deny that he is a good guitarist but like radiospirit touched on, in the movie he is just so out of place next to Jack White and Page. In another setting he might come off totally different but by the end of the movie after getting so much insight into how page and white work The Edge just comes off kinda bad. It also doesn't help that his name is "The Edge"
he might be but in the movie it looks like he just completely relies on distortion and effects and has no real musical voice
exactly. everyone i've talked to about that movie says the same thing. Jimmy shows off all these awesome tricks, then Jack does the same thing, and then The Edge is just like, "well...i mostly just play this one chord here, and use all these effects pedals to make it sound like i'm doing something cool"
I found myself almost snoring everytime The Edge did anything in that movie. It's not that I dislike U2 I just don't think that The Edge is nearly as interesting as Jack White or Jimmy Page. Also I really don't want to see U2 next year. I'm just not really a fan of their music.
