It doesn't really matter whether or not it's as accurate as possible to the real-life story. It doesn't even matter that it's about Facebook. It's just a great story and an even greater movie. Plain and simple.
I guess. The plot of "guy screws over business partner to make bazillions of dollars" isn't anything new. I think what gets the buzz for this movie is that it's essentially "The Facebook Movie" and therefore since just about everyone has Facebook, they can somehow relate to it. That is what is getting people into theaters and not necessarily the performance aspect.
Maybe you should stop being critical of something you haven't seen yet.

Why should people spend 16 dollars a ticket for a movie just to have the right to discuss it?
Because he's discrediting a good movie based on seeing a 30 second trailer a few times.
Also, to discuss a movie, usually you have to, you know, see it.
Also 16 bucks? Where the hell are you going to see your movies.
It is not like it has hidden plot twists or anything and it has been discussed 1000 times in all forms of media over the past weekend. Also lets be fair if he agreed with your opinion and had not seen it you would be cheering him on.
I rarely if ever go see movies in the theater, just a couple a year so I try to be discerning. I do not think this one is going to make my list, I doubt it would have any buzz at all if it was not connected to Facebook.com.
Also I always buy costco tickets they knock it down to around 8 apiece, so 16 to take someone to a movie.
I doubt it would have any buzz at all if it was not connected to Facebook.com.
This couldn't be further from the truth. The success of the movie has almost zero to do with Facebook.
Ok, do you really think people would care as much if it was about myspace?
Really?
I'm under the impression that seeing the movie is just about the only requirement for having a discussion on it.
I am not a film critic who is going to go see every movie, especially one that looks like it has a contrived premise I am not going to enjoy. That does not mean that I necessarily have to sit out a discussion as long as I qualify my opinion and do not pretend to have seen it.
That's fine, but you don't know that it isn't a good movie. Because you haven't seen it. This is my last post on this matter. This is getting ridiculous...
Also, your question about "if it was MySpace" makes no sense. The story is about Facebook, but that doesn't even matter in the context of the movie; it just matters that the main character is starting a multi-billion dollar company via the internet. And, again, this movie isn't contrived or corny in the slightest. Don't assume that just because it's about Facebook. It plays out like a well-written novel.
As I said earlier, I've been surprised before... I will look at it more openly when I see it. Just nothing has compelled me to go buy a ticket, or even find a bootleg, honestly.

You must have eaten a great big bowl of CORRECT for breakfast.

That would be like you stopping being critical of music you haven't listened to.
The success of the movie has almost zero to do with Facebook.
That's such BS. If that were the case, Pirates of Silicon Valley would have been a huge movie too. 500 million people have Facebook, you can't even try to pretend like this movie didn't try to tap into that fanbase.
They made this movie because of the story behind the creation of Facebook, not because of Facebook. When I said the success of the movie has ZERO to do with Facebook, I didn't mean financial success, I meant the success of the actual film itself. It's not good because it's about Facebook. It's good because the story is good and it's a technically sound, well-written, well-acted film. It's easy to dismiss this movie because Facebook is so prevalent in the movie, but we all should be open-minded enough to realize that a movie can have something dumb in it and still be a good movie, if the story is good. And the story is good. And once again, in the context of the film, it DOES NOT MATTER THAT IT'S FACEBOOK. It just matters that the kid started a multi-billion dollar company via the internet. And, yes, I realize I sound like a broken record, but I'm gonna keep saying it until people understand.
And, it should be noted that I wouldn't be calling you wrong if you'd seen the movie and were saying you didn't like it. Or if you hadn't seen it and were saying it didn't look good to you. But you are actually claiming, without seeing the movie, that it is not good.

Where exactly have I done that? I have claimed that it does not look interesting to me, and I have claimed that in my opinion it seems like a very contrived plot that was designed to use an old movie formula mixed with a pop culture phenomenon in a way to maximize buzz and profit. Also I have said that I am justified in having these opinions without seeing the movie, I am not going to go see every movie before I have an opinion on whether or not it is good. Maybe it is great I don't know, and honestly from what I know about it I doubt I will find out.

When I said you were wrong, it was mostly in response to your comment that Zapp, NoD, and I decide whether something is good or not. I try to avoid that whenever I can and try to simply state MY opinion on the matter. Zapp seems to do a good job of the same. NoD on the other hand...just kidding, NoD I was annoyed. You're entitled to think this movie doesn't look good, of course.
Music is a lot different than a 2 hour movie, but I listen to all the music I'm critical of at least once so I can have an opinion on it.
uh huh.
so you've listened to justin bieber?
are you guys seriously arguing if someone is allowed to say whether or not a movie looks dull to them??? get real. who gives a shiz if they've seen it. quit hijacking threads.

Once again, just one last time to clear everything up, I (and I'm pretty sure NoD, too) was saying that you can't say a movie is bad without having seen it, which is what we both thought Jess was saying. Of course you're within your rights to say a movie looks, but that's different from actually saying that it's a bad movie or a dumb movie without having seen it. That's all.
I liked Justin Timberlakes character in the movie. Before seeing this,I honestly never thought I'd be able to take him seriously as an actor.
Timberlake is one seriously talented dude. That, I cannot deny. He stole the show on SNL a few years back, even if the show sucked/sucks that's still no small feat. I liked him in Black Snake Moan, but everything about that movie was totally over the top.
Just, avoid Southland Tales at all costs... another bad movie from another overrated filmmaker ( Richard Kelly also directed the heap known as Donnie Darko) .
