I wasn't sure which forum to post this in, as I'm referencing both the movie and the album. First off, it's a beautiful, haunting movie score. I saw the movie yesterday (which was excellent) and have been listening to the album all day. But, for anyone else that saw the movie... was it just me or did his music seem to not 'fit' at times? It seemed a little TOO dark and brooding, like it was composed as a horror movie score.
Movie looks terribly uninteresting to me, but I'm really intrigued by the ost.
I know it looks that way. Upon seeing the trailer, I had 0 interest in seeing this movie. The only things that attracted me to the movie were knowing it was directed by David Fincher and scored by Trent Reznor. Then I saw the reviews and that really motivated me to get out there and dish out the dough for this movie. And it really was worth it. It's pretty intriguing. It's just one of those movies that doesn't lend itself well to a movie trailer I think the 100/100 reviews everywhere are giving it a little too much credit, but I'd give it a solid 90/100.
I've seen all these great reviews... I'll see it sometime, but I'm not exactly rushing to the theater in excitement either. Looks like a movie with a bunch of detestable characters, on a topic that is very much "now" with seemingly little future relevance... like, I don't see this movie as being very important when no one's using Facebook anymore (don't know when that'll be, though). And I think there have been quite a few movies since Dark Knight to have been BETTER than The Dark Knight, for the record. Movie is and was a good bit overrated, IMO.
I just don't understand the interest people have in the story. Douchebag steals the idea for facebook, then stabs his friends / partners in the back, now he is a billionaire, by facilitating the theft of your web surfing histories. So many people I know are all about this movie because David Fincher directed it, or because Reznor did the sound track.
Regardless who did what, or what people say about it, im not gonna pay 10 dollars to see a story about how a douchebag became the youngest billionaire in history.
As far as Fincher, The Game was good and Se7en is a modern classic, but the rest of his work did nothing for me. Fight Club was one of the most disappointing movies I can ever remember seeing in the theater.
Fincher is celebrated because of fight club. Seven was great, Alien 3 was entertaining, but fight club gave him the legions of fans he has. Fight club is a great dark comedy, but thats where it stops, people who talk about that movie like its life changing should go ahead and cut their wrists.
Last 4 films fincher has made: Panic Room - BOOOOO Zodiac - 1 of 3 movies to put me to sleep in a theater Benjamin Button- eh, ok "The Social Network" - Ill pass.
PS: about zodiac, I fell asleep, and I was fully rested. I also fell asleep during V for Vendetta, and Man on Fire. But to be fair, I hadn't slept for 4 days when I saw man on fire, My memory of that movie was like a bad trip. I always woke up while The Mark Has Been Made was playing....
What people forget about Fight Club, is that when it came out, it wasn't a big success. Reviews were average at best (with a few exceptions) and I don't think the box office receipts were anything to write home about. Then, it built a reputation on video, not for being a great movie, but this "mind bendingly awesome movie". It's like a cult classic... not particularly criticically acclaimed , but hugely popular. I'd honestly say it's a ** movie ( out of 5).

Now that deserves a big booooooooooo. Love Aphex Twin, and that's his best record (if it can be called a record).
Back to The Social Network, I'm actually with you on Fincher, Bishop. I thought Fight Club was a very mediocre movie that has its reputation built up by teenage boys, whom the movie is aimed at. I just felt like it was an enjoyable, but very juvenile, movie. My favorite Fincher movie is actually Zodiac, and whoever said they fell asleep during it in theatres doesn't know anything about movie enjoyment. That was a great, truly tense yet truly unique film. But, TSN blew Zodiac out of the water. Make no mistake, The Social Network, while entertaining, is not a movie aimed at the movie-going masses; it is a capital-f film, a work of art, and everybody involved here is masterful at their craft (even Fincher). It's all about the subtleties here, in the script, in the direction, in the pacing, in the acting. It reaps greater rewards for those who like to truly pay attention to even the seemingly little details in films. It's just a bonus that it happens to have an incredibly intelligent and entertaining story.
I've told my friends this, and I don't hesitate to say it--it's like a modern-day Citizen Kane. Not in terms of quality, since no movie, upon release at least, should be compared to Citizen Kane in terms of quality, but in terms of its story, its themes, and its pacing, it definitely plays out like a modern update on that movie. It's a GREAT movie, and not necessarily because of the story; just because it's an extremely well-executed film. Best film I've seen this year since Winter's Bone (a film, to me, that is just as great and intriguing as this one, but for whatever reason, is getting seemingly zero hype).

ok well first off, when I made that statement I hadn't listened to SAW since high school at the time when I'd first started discovered to aphex twin, and I couldn't appreciate it at that time. I revisited selected ambient works since that conversation and I actually enjoy it now. But I still prefer the mindfucking jungle-esque off the wall insanity that is Drukqs far more. Just more my thing.
But Fight Club **/*****? Mediocre? I'm sure I'm not going to change your opinion with any argument so I'm not going to spend my energy on that, but jeez... that is downright heresy, I'm sorry.

Fincher didnt direct Man on Fire, or V for Vendetta. That would be Tony Scott and James McTiegue
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

I didn't claim that he did, that was a post note, and I just mentioned the other 2 movies that put me to sleep in the theater, zodiac being the one he directed.
This movie looks like an overly sensationalized piece of crap. It's framed as a "true story" when in reality it's about as close to history as Inglorious Basterds.

It doesn't really matter whether or not it's as accurate as possible to the real-life story. It doesn't even matter that it's about Facebook. It's just a great story and an even greater movie. Plain and simple.
^IDK I thought Zodiac was not a very well put together movie myself. I did like Fight Club, however I saw it after having read the book which always makes a difference in how you view a movie and it's themes. If you think fight Club is about fighting, you kind of missed the point, and a lot of people did. Panic Room, and Alien 3 were also pretty good imo, however I did not like SCOBB at all, so he is pretty hit or miss for me.

I guess. The plot of "guy screws over business partner to make bazillions of dollars" isn't anything new. I think what gets the buzz for this movie is that it's essentially "The Facebook Movie" and therefore since just about everyone has Facebook, they can somehow relate to it. That is what is getting people into theaters and not necessarily the performance aspect.
^x2 I did not think Fight Club was about fighting. I just didn't think it was anything more than a mediocre flick. But, like I said, I actually like Zodiac a lot, so to each his own. However, I do agree that Fincher is hit or miss; TSN is by far his biggest hit, in my book at least.
^ Maybe that is what's getting people into the theaters (not everybody, though--for instance, I went to see it the first day and I very rarely go on Facebook), but that is not what the movie is going for in any way, shape or form. The people behind this movie really have something to say about modern society, and they say it without the movie getting obnoxiously preachy.
A lot of what they're saying in it is actually pretty damn critical of Facebook and the internet culture, when you really get to the bottom of the points they make in the film. And to simplify the plot to "guy screws over business partner to make bazillions of dollars" is beyond oversimplification. There is so much more to it than that and I think you'll agree if and when you see it. The overlying themes of the story--which are, essentially, the calculated emotions and too-quick pace of the digital age and the motivations behind (just like CF Kane, Zuckerberg is chasing after not money, but something he lost in his youth) and cost of building an empire in capitalist America--are ones we've seen before, but they're ones I am very much interested in. Not to mention, they are presented in a way that is wholly unique and not in any way cliched or familiar.
And beyond the actual story, as I've said, it's just an extremely well-executed movie.
