My Morning Jacket played the Album Z in it's entirety last night as part of a sick show they ripped at Terminal 5. For the encore they reeled off a string of classic covers starting with P-Funk, then the Who's 'A Quick One While He's Away' (which they played late night at B'roo 2006), a Prince classic before launching into George Michael and Wham's 'Careless Whisper'. Alright, i'm gonna be honest here. I can't get into MMJ. This year was my first Roo and after joining these boards and reading about the possible 2011 headliners, MMJ was all over it. So naturally, I wanted to check out their music.
After researching for a while, I decided to purchase Z. Listened to it on a 4 hour trip home, and just wasn't feeling it at all. Did I start off with the wrong album or is it probably just not my thing?

I am not a huge fan of their albums myself, that being said the two times I have seen them live they really brought it, and I really enjoyed the shows.

Yeah, I feel like it's impossible to understand MMJ without seeing them live. I don't know why they don't just record it more like they play it? Regardless, maybe try Okonokos since it is their live album... still not like ACTUALLY being there, but it is several steps closer... check your PM's mjb8797, I just sent you a pair of links

1.) Get the DVD of Okonokos.
2.) Play it on a player with a decent audio system.
we are here for you babe. ... yeah you need to see them live. no way to describe the party it is. please see them and get the dvd as was mentioned. come towards the light babe
While Evil Urges made them a must see at 'Roo fer me, I didn't fully grasp their awesomness until that latenight 2008 set! A friend (who also went in '08) burned me a copy of It Still Moves years before and I just couldn't get into it. I think their live show is what really sells them, and then you can better get into their studio stuff, which still pales in comparison to their amazin' live energy!

My first MMJ experience was from watching the Bonnaroo 2004 dvd. I still missed them at ACL 2007 for Wilco since I was still clueless. Inforoo made a huge deal about them and I was sold after their SXSW 2008 live broadcast where they debuted a bunch of Evil Urges stuff.
At bonnaroo that year, my neighbors basically told me. Go see My Morning Jacket, they will change your life.
I completely agree with that statement. I am still baffled how they were able to control the rain during solos. But they did.
I rank the Bonnaroo 2008 MMJ as the most epic show ever. Their Dallas set with Erykah Badu singing Tyrone a couple months later bolstered their awesomeness even more.
I was disappointed they didn't make it to Dallas this tour, but the Monsters of Folk set had 3 MMJ songs so that was my fix for the year.
