At the moment this doesn't mean much since no venues parties or almost anything else has been scheduled. Last year they had well over 2000 bands and over 100,000 people, I expect nothing less this year. Where else can you go to a festival and see tons of free shows that have free drinks. It's so much fun.
Who all is planning on going next year?
It's always a certainty for me living in Texas.
SXSW Music runs from March 16th-20th (Tuesday - Saturday I believe)
From my perspective, badges and wristbands aren't necesary at all. But there will always be some shows that will be impossible to get into without them. Fader Fort is an absolute must though. Free beer and SoCo all weekend.
I'd love to go. I had a friend who went last year and it sounded like a blast. I'd have to miss a couple days of school, but I'd be alright. Going to see what finances look like come January/February, and what other fest lineups look like

I am surprised this thread is as dead as it is. There are somewhere around 1900 bands booked for SXSW, and so many shows can be seen for free. Yall are totally missing out. SXSW is definitely the most unique music festival in the USA, at least for city festivals.
In comparison to other festivals, there are way over a hundred different stages to see shows at SXSW. It's hard to adhere to a schedule when you walk down the street and wu-tang or digitalism is playing unexpectedly.

I will definitely have screeching Weasel high up on my schedule. That and the Kills at Emo's if possible also.
It's so ridiculous planning what to see at SXSW. Still need to see what the line-up is for Fader Fort, Carniville and Mess With Texas before I set many plans.
NOFX played all of Punk In Drublic at Mess with Texas in 2008 and me and my friends snuck backstage and watched the show on stage. that was the best punk show I have ever been to, if not the best SXSW show I have been to.
Also, I highly recommend having a bike for SXSW. Austin is a great town for it and some venues are kinda far away. It makes travelling so much easier.

Some rumors are now floating around that Radiohead might be premiering their new album at SXSW this year. I don't see any meat to the rumors, but if this is true, the area around Stubbs would be like Bourbon Street if they played there. I would hangout outside the venue, I caught some of Metallica this way.

I didn't start the rumor, but I imagine if they played Stubb's like Metallica or Muse it would be impossible to get into. They would probably rope off the entire block for badges and wristband only. Security around the Metallica SXSW show was pretty insane.
I am leaning on highly doubtful for the rumor, and am guessing The Strokes for the main headliner at Stubb's. I wonder if anything else other than Widespread Panic is booked for the ACL TV venue.
quite possible they have a documentary in the film fest, or even just an appearance at the interactive since they are releasing so much online and for free. that may be how a rumor started

Here's a band from Terre Haute that just got booked. I saw them the other night and they are so much fun. Lots of audience participation (clapping solos, snapping songs). Most fun I've had at a show in quite some time.
A Thieve's Parade 2/24 Conspirator 2/26 Kevin Smith 3/11 Keller 3/17 Papadosio 3/18 JJ Grey 3/25 Bela Fleck/Edgar Meyer 3/26 Toubab Krewe 3/27 O'Death 4/11 Budos Band 4/22 EOTO 4/28 Summer Camp 5/6-29 All Good

That is NOT a punk show.
that was my thinking. thanks for saying it out loud first

That was my punk roots, maybe not hardcore punk, but that show was awesome. Punk In Drublic was my transition from Green Day and Nirvana into punk in my teens. I didn't go far past Guttermouth, Propagandhi, The Queers and Screeching Weasel into the realm of hardcore punk though.
Not sure what you want to call it then, but it's punk enough for me. The crowd was pretty insane for that show.

In h.s. my punk friends and I listened to Ramones, Sex Pistols, Screeching Weasel, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and the like. Then I went away to school. When I came home for xmas they were all about NOFX. I was sickened and saddened. While at school I had discovered Subhumans, Stiff Little Fingers, The Business, Sham 69, One Way System, Toy Dolls, Blank 77, Casualties, the 4 Skins and droves of other proper punk bands. I incessantly made fun of them for regressing to kiddie poser psuedo-punk while I had progressed to Oi! The punkest think they were listening to was Rancid and that shit was all over MTV.
Mind you, I could care less what people like or listen to, but these were the guys in my band. That made it a problem. I wasn't about to start sounding like fucking Lagwaggon. After a while we were all listening to the Pist and Antiheroes and all was right with the world again. The Truents, The Krays, The Infiltrators. Yeah. Good times.

Queens of The Stone Age is playing at La Zona Rosa on Wednesday the 16th. I don't plan on making it to Austin until Wednesday night and a wristband or badge will be needed for this show. Most likely badges only.
This gives you an idea who all has played at Fader Fort before.
Last year it was free budweiser and soco all day. I think I had 6 tallboys by the time Bone played.
I have a ton of SXSW pictures from the past 2 years in my photos on my signature. I am probably gonna hold off on getting an SLR before sxsw, but will probably have one for bonnaroo.

Looks like Kanye will be playing at SXSW. This is bound to have a mile long line. I don't think it matters to almost anyone on this board though.
I am still hoping for Outkast at Fader which my friends industry friend said is confirmed.
Still no sign of fader fort or mess with Texas party just yet, although I saw that Public Enemy and Mastodon are two of the unconfirmed bands playing Mess With Texas.
