hey guys last year we car camped and it was great but 2011 we were thinking about tent only. i was wondering if tent only filled up all the way at the last fest. we would arrive around Thursday afternoon. i am also considering bringing a cabin tent for us around a 10 by 12 tent and a 12 by 12 canopy along with a 3 by 3 shower. is this to much space to take up with four people? my last question is about theft. i know to leave valuables in the car but did anyone have problems with missing stuff like chairs, coolers, lanterns or clothes in tent only?
We did not have any problems really with theft last year in camp inforoo, but bring some bike locks and chain all your stuff together. I filled up pretty quick last year, but I would expect to be able to find some space on Thursday afternoon, just hump up there with your tent and shade first thing when you arrive, and get the rest later.
I've done tent only every year I've been at Bonnaroo. Last year, we arrived mid-morning and there was space around us. But by mid-afternoon, it was pretty full. If you want to do TO, I would suggest trying to get there early and claiming some space. Especially with the large tent and canopy you'd be bringing.
As for theft, yes, it happens. The last two years, at least one of our coolers has been stolen. BUT, it was a cooler that had no been locked up. I secure my cooler to the canopy pole with a cheap bike lock (literally from the dollar store). Makes it less easy for someone to just walk off with it. But that has been it as far as theft for us. We also make sure to get a space in the middle of tent only, not next to a "road". Also, I do not bring anything of value, other than a camera, which I keep on/next to me at all times when I'm at camp.
^^ What he said. I was pretty upset at how much space the stupid Tent City took up. There aren't portos in TO anymore; we had to walk to another POD to use theirs.
Our walk to the portos the previous two years was like 20 yards... so that's why we were a little irked to walk farther. Maybe not as big of a deal for fellas, but for us ladies, when you gotta go in the middle of the night, there's a BIG difference in 20 yards and 200 yards.

Everybody poops.
But I think there were fewer portos throughout the whole festival also, combined with more people than the last couple years, that presented a problem as well.

I didn't have any real complaints with the portos in 09, but last year the ones in Centeroo seemed to have much less cleaning done. I don't know any real reason, but the saturation of the ground may have had something to do with it, as those big trucks would have torn things up pretty bad.
all pros and cons considered I couldn't imagine doing roo anywhere but TO. I love it up there. My crew will be right behind that tent again this year. Hit us up!

It is the way to go if you don't mind leaving your car where it is parked. The proximity to Centeroo is nice, but its also nice to be able to lock your valuables up, etc. And in some ways its easier to just set up when you get parked, rather than haul everything to Tent only. As with everything there are pros and cons.
As I understand it, yup. But Tent Only doesn't open up until sometime on Thursday. So if you get in Wednesday night you still gotta rest up in your car or set up only a bit of camp and then pack it back up.
Moving your stuff from your car to TO is not a big deal if you're prepared. Bring a wagon and/or handtrucks (the foldable kind, you can find them pretty much anywhere). Last year, we had our stuff hauled in and camp set up in Tent Only in an hour and a half. We had two handtrucks and four of us to rotate going back and forth to the car. Everyone made two trips to the car... while those were going back to the car, the ones that stayed behind would set up camp.
For us, the proximity is completely worth hauling out stuff from our car. I have never regretted it. Plus, you get as much space as you want (but don't be an @ss and take up a lot of space if there are just two of you). So you're not packed in on top of each other like you are at the cars.
A nice thing is that if you wait to leave on Monday morning, you can bring your car up to Tent Only and pack everything up. Sometimes, the staff will try to get you to go back where you came from, but really, they just want everyone out so they don't argue. I always just wave at them as I drive by.

thanks for this thread!
'11's gonna be my first roo, and i'm pretty sure i want to do tent only. do you think it's better to show up late wednesday then stay up/powernap until 8am thursday, or just show up really early thursday?
how do you keep your things safe at tent only? i won't be bringing many valuables, but do people just keep their tents unlocked?
maybe we could bring a second cooler to put semi-valuables in and chain it to our other cooler. i figure we can put a bike lock through the two coolers and chain it to maybe the inside of our tent or something...

If you come in Wednesday night, you will have the longest walk to tent only, I think you are better off coming in Thursday early and moving then. It shouldn't fill up before late afternoon or evening, if then. As far as valuables go, its better to not attract attention to your stuff with a bunch of locks and such, since you will be gone for lengthy amounts of time, if someone wants in your tent, its fairly easy to cut one open. If you aren't worried about losing them, carry them with you. Or just make daily trips, in the morning, to your car to get more money, etc. And make friends with your neighbors and help watch out for each others stuff.

I have no idea. All I've ever heard is that tent only opens sometime Thursday morning. Not sure how it works if you don't have a car to park and wait at.

Yeah last year we came in Wednesday night and got put in BFE (as expected and planned, thank you inforoo for the heads up!) and it seemed like they weren't letting us trek it to tent only because of the traffic coming through on that forest lined road that you have to take. I remember waking up early and being so excited I wanted to walk to shakedown buy a goodieglass and see everything, but alas we were trapped in BFE until they opened up the trail at like what, 8:30 am?
Im not gonna have a car so I definitely want to go tent only this year, but I'd also still like to be a part of the wednesday night/thursday morning early bird vibe. I hope it works out.
