best places to run into musicians are either at the press/media/artists entrance (basically anyone whose not general admission has access back in this area - its where the road on the left side of which stage runs into the wall, located between which and what stages, i assume anyone who's been before knows exactly where i'm talking about). i've been media the past 2 years and last year as i was walking out from the backstage media area, margaret cho and joel from umphrey's were walking out into the main concert grounds (not together or the same day), actually joel veered left and was checking out from the field whatever band was on the which stage.
you also want to get up close at tent shows. artists have access to side stage areas, and most will watch shows from back there. you might not be able to talk to them, some just want to be left alone and stuff. last year i saw so many musicians back there (again i was media so i got to go back there). by the time i left john prine's set i realized that david rawlings was standing next to me the whole time. also saw a bunch of bands that played on thursday like neon indian, temper trap, local natives, in 09 i watched passion pit right next to janelle monae. in 2010 also came within arms length of jack black, steve martin, kris kristofferson, beatle bob (actually talked to him), um, i don't know, so many others. just be on the look out. some might think its stupid but its kinda cool to see some of your fav musicians checking out other bands. i mean they are regular people too.
Is this a thread for suggestions for those who are new.
Find someplace in the shade to cool off, and make time through out the day to go there, sit down, rest, rehydrate, and cool off. In 2008 there was a tent with a karaoke band, 2010 there was a tent with a coffee bar inside, right next to the solar stage.
Drink more water than beer / soda, atleast 2 liters a day is a good amount to start
Camelbaks are awesome, if you can't afford one, get the Bass Pro Shop knock off brand, they dont last as long, but they only cost like $30 to $40 brand new
Dont worry about showers, everyone there will be hot and smelly and dirty and muddy, no one will judge you.
The bathroom situation is smelly, and at times nasty. Examine the portapottie before entering, clorox wipes to clean the seat, and wet wipes to clean your ass will make the experience much more forgetable. Please do not shit in the urinal.
Sunblock everywhere that is exposed, and bug spray on what is exposed of your feet and legs.
Take good care of your feet, invest in a brand new bag of socks for bonnaroo, I would reccommend cusioned sole crew socks (the cusoned sole helps absorb mostier). In the mornings, clean and dry your feet, doctor any blisters, and put on a pair of fresh clean socks, change your socks at some point during the day. Tennis Shoes are best IMO, as they provide support for your arches, help to keep your feet clean and dry, arent as likely to come off, and protect your toes.
Dress comfortably
A hat that can be thrown away on monday is a great investment.
Buy twice as much water as you think you will need.
Good flashlights are another great investment
Fill your gas tank, use the restroom, and get ice BEFORE GETTING IN LINE
Be patient, it will take an eternity to get in. Cops patrol the area to keep everyone safe and to make sure you aren't partying too hard on the side of the interstate.
When you finally get to your camp, ask the guy directing traffic what camp you are in, and circle it on your map.
