Sonny. Rollins.
To be fair, I've heard he's pretty inconsistent these days. Not that he hasn't got it anymore, but that he tries too hard to pander to whatever crowd he's playing to. In a festival setting, he may not come off too well. But nothing can take away from the fact that he's one of the few living jazz legends we have left.
Ron Carter Trio and Ahmad Jamal should also be top notch.
What type of aftershows are there? Mostly local artists?
This is a great question. I'd like to know as well.
Lots of local artists for sure, but not only... My Morning Jacket did one at Preservation Hall last year for just 100 people, and I know of at least one lucky inforoo'er who got into it.
A lot of people even head to NOLA during Jazzfest JUST for the aftershows.
There is nothing up yet, but they will get listed here once they start getting scheduled, and there will be dozens upon dozens of them throughout the entire festival run.

I just noticed a HUGE bonus for me while taking the time to read every name on the lineup. Edie Brickell. I may be the only one that cares, but I LOVE her music. It's one of those nostaglia, no one else I know likes it, but it just connected to me for some reason things. I never thought I'd get to see her.

"I just got fragged by a non-working speak." 5 Roo's and counting
i'll be there on the first friday and maybe the second friday... if i really go nuts i may go on the thurs for wilco. but now that im heavily thinking about hangout fest, jazz fest is on the back burner

I've decided that this will probably be too much trouble with hotel prices and travel costs and everything. Specially since Wilco is coming to Houston on Friday.
though if Arcade Fire doesnt come through Texas sometime this spring, I may end up changing my mind. Strokes too, though to a lesser degree because I know they eventually will
I'd be so much more tempted if everything wasn't so spread out though. Like theres no way I can make it Thursday to see Wilco here, but if they were on the Friday night playing before or after Arcade Fire, I'd seriously considering going to this over just Wilco's Houston date.

Yeah, you can't really go to Jazz Fest for the headliners (unless you live nearby). I think they do that on purpose. The locals/unknowns are who really make it Jazz Fest. I do live nearby, so I'm probably gonna go just on the first Friday for Jeff Beck (who IS playing - he was left off accidentally in one lineup I saw). oh and I guess I should go see Arcade Fire while they're hot, the lineup that day is pretty sick too... (second Friday)
^Aftershows for the Howlin'Wolf and Ampersand/CAC.
I'm going to Lotus at Howlin Wolf next week, possibly Crystal Castles at the CAC, and definitely Thievery at the Sugar Mill. As for Jazz Fest itself, I'm only going on the second weekend. Anyone who's out there on the first Sunday should check out Los PoBoy Citos.
edit: Gravity A at the Dragons Den (on Esplanade near Frenchmen St) is going to be a great late night party. I may go there after Thievery www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=151563071567640
day one was great. this was my first time to go to jazz fest, surprisingly, and it was pretty good. i mean, its no bonnaroo or even voodoo fest, but it was a lot of fun.
the good parts: like any and every new orleans festival, the food is great. the people were great. temperatures and humidity were pretty pleasant. sound quality was good and i really enjoyed all the shows that i saw, especially robert plant, jeff beck, and the avett brothers.
the bad: a lot of the festival grounds are concrete or pavement; only about half of it is actual grass. this would be so much better if it was done in city park like voodoo fest. i dont like that it ends at 7 basically, but i guess it does allow for a lot of time for after-shows. most importantly, the scheduling is horrible at jazz fest. artists are not staggered at all: if two bands are on at the same time that you want to see, those bands ARE ON AT THE SAME TIME. at least at roo the main stage try to start and end about 30 min to an hour apart from each other.
