Anyone else notice a lot (more than usual) of technical sound problems last year? A fair number of bands I saw were having trouble with sound levels, mics not being on, instruments being muted, etc etc.
The worst was with Daryl Hall w/ Chromeo. P-Thugg's talk box honestly only seemed to work about 30-40% of the time and he was visibly annoyed, sometimes shaking it and pointing at it to the sound guy.
Did anyone else experience this? Was there a reason? ie. new staff? Was it just an anomaly?

Last year was my first Roo so I don't have multiple years of comparison but I had been told by friends that the sound was impeccable and that the bleed between stages was non-existent. I had high expectations. I know for sure there was bleed everywhere near the lunar stage. I've said it other places but it almost ruined a couple of sets. I also noticed a bit of bleed from the Which stage but it wasn't really bad. They did have problems with the Sattelite feed of the USA & England game at the Troo Music Lounge. They got the game on screen about half time. The screen on the Lunar stage wasn't really viewable due to the sun fading out the screen and distance I would have been at, the place was packed. No problem hearing it. I will say there was someone there working on the issue at the Troo lounge nonstop until it was resolved. Outside of those minor issues I would have to say that I was pretty impressed. That is a large number of musicians in a pretty short time frame and things sounded pretty damn good everywhere I went and I was at every stage at least once with the exception of the comedy tent.

Yeah the Lunar stage is a whole other can of worms. I really think the placement last year was a mistake for such a loud stage. There was definitely sound bleed at the This? and Other tents if you weren't directly under the tents themselves and even then there was sometimes when the tents were playing a quiet part. I really really really hope they reconsider the location of the Lunar stage. That being said, it was a good idea and I support the Lunar stage 100%.

I will personally lead a Jihad of Suicide Wooks against that Lunar Stage this year. It drowned out everything and all around sucked except for the artists playing. Fuck Green Day Rock Band. keep that shit in the XBOX tent where it belongs. Bring back Such N' Such and their flamethrowers. And ditto that staph infected water slide. I would rather have a threesome with some female wooks it would be much cleaner.

I did not see much out of the ordinary other than Murphy getting pissed at TCM and telling the sound guy to make it louder like 3 or 4 times.
I was front and center and that's another than sticks out in my mind. Also Dan Deacon was having sound issues.
I think maybe it sticks out last year because it happened at a lot of my most looked forward to acts and it was a little disappointing for me that it wasn't perfect.

I think it was because those bands more than most others used elaborate setups with a huge amount of different instruments and the sound guys couldn't handle it. Hope it isn't a problem next year.
^Dude I am pretty sure Dan Deacon always is going to do that to sound guys. He was trying to balance the sound on like 4 vibraphones, and all those other instruments. I do not think that was out of the ordinary. If Centeroo could just get like an eighth of a mile bigger the whole way round I think they could solve most of my complaints.

1. The Which Stage is too damn quiet, I am not that old and when I can stand even at the bleachers during a NIN concert and have a normal volume conversation with my neighbor something is wrong. Literally the troo music lounge was drowning it out, same thing this year for the Flips.
2. Lunar stage, ok I am the first to admit I am not a electronic music fan generally but I can deal with it. However what fucked up sadist came up with the idea of a stage that would wake me up at 10:30 playing Green Day, Serenade me at 6:00am to Deadmou5, and yet be inexplicably too quiet for me to hear Conan cleanly from camp inforoo. The only Electronic act I wanted to see was LCD, and until those people in the dog costumes grabbed me and took me up front it was getting drowned out by The Crystal Method playing the theme from "Bones" at unacceptably high volumes. Something has got to give here.

I haved the Lunar stage because I wanted to be able to hear a band, but the Lunar stage messed up everything. Too many stages facing the same area of Centeroo. There is not enough room by This and The Other Tents to have the Lunar. Maybe take part of the What Stage field late at night.
In 2008, Sigur Ros had some sound issues during their set. I remember Jonsi saying something to that affect after one of their songs.
Also in 2008, BSS was having sound problems. I remember dude (Drew? Is that his name?) was literally cussing at the sound people, telling them to fix it or they were going to stop playing. It was kinda uncomfortable to watch.
I received an email this year after I filled out my "custy satisfaction survey" saying that they heard a lot of criticism from dedicated 'roosters and to look out for some changes ranging from centeroo layout, port o fixes, and more shaded areas in and out of centeroo! Looks like the tenth will be the best!
I have worked almost every possible tech job for large concerts and can tell you that Bonnaroo pulls off some amazing shit. the only bad sound i have ever heard at Roo before last year, was Ween in one of the tents a few years back. your average custy has no clue the amount of crap that goes on backstage. even with an impeccable, salty crew you can still come off looking amateur if you are near newb acts in the schedule. I think the problem with last year is they had way too many fresh bands who are inevitably going to have relatively greenhorn crews that cant handle the level of professionalism, speed and courteous restrictions due to stage proximities. if they take too long getting off stage, it makes you rush, or they start pulling the wrong tape, cables, etc... and then there are times when shit just goes wrong, when no amount of preparation or professionalism could have avoided it... like amps going down, snakes dropping, NL4's getting screwed since they are so goddamn fragile. I have never seen any issues on the which and what stages, because every single band has super crews that can see way ahead what is going to be a problem and remedy it, not rush, not freak out cause 5000 wooks are getting itchy.... anyway, thats my take on it.
Kid Cudi had the worst sounding set of everyone I saw. IDK if it was just him but you could barely hear a lot of the stuff he did, it sounded like mumbling lol. Really was dissapointed , I loved Cudi's first album.
Yea stevie wonders sound was off. the volume was set way too low people didnt even think he was playing it was so quiet. He put on an amazing set though....the crowd didnt seem into it. stupid young kids

i thought stevie sounded fine. I dont think the what stage has ever sounded anything other than impeccable. the worst area to be for sound is in front of the delay towers. by in front, i mean stage side of them (since they are pointing away from the stage).
Yeah from where I was durin' his performance it sounded great! I was originally within 300ft of the vendin' booths on the right side of the What stage, then moved toward the back left to meet up with my 'Roo neighbor from 2008 fer a while. Finally started headin' back to camp in 007 15 minutes before his set ends and it sounded good all the way back.
As Jess pointed out earlier in the thread, the Which Stage is indeed too quiet. I was by the bleachers last year for the Lips and it was very distant sounding. Very hard to get in to. It didn't help either that Bassnectar was overpowering what little sound we could hear with his whompwhomps.

I don't know how far away from the stage you were, but Stevie killed it. I was just behind the pit and it was worth the hassle and wait. I wish he played I Wish, though.

Yeah terrible sound bleed last year with the lunar stage. Awesome idea, poor placement. If they turned it around and had the speakers facing the opposite direction that would help, but not sure how the city of Manchester would feel about that. Also, they need to work on the sound setup for That Tent. On multiple occasions there was terrible echo. Not only this year but in years past. The MGMT show from a few years back and Kid Cudi this past year had terrible echo and unless you were close it was not enjoyable.
