Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Let's try work through this. Insider alluded to a hip-hop act rounding out the headliners, most likely Saturday night. Without insider's input, many of us believed this to begin with. So what do we have:
-Jay-Z was at the fest last year so that essentially rules him out. -Nas is in the same boat and is probably not big enough to carry HL status at a festival like Bonnaroo. -Insider alluded to Lil Wayne falling through. -SP/ACE is not dumb enough to book Drake/Minaj as headliners. -Lupe, Wiz, Cudi, and so many other names just aren't big enough quite obviously.
Where does that leave us:
-Dr. Dre/Eminem are big enough together to carry the Saturday HL spot even at a fest like Bonnaroo. Dre's Detox makes this a good possibility. Add a Snoop to this and it gets that much bigger, yet less likely.
-Cee-Lo Green is not big enough to headline Bonnaroo. However, he is already performing at Coachella and Hangout. We already know Big Boi is performing. Possibly a collaboration performance with Cee-Lo and Big Boi, adding other members of Goodie Mob. Hell, even throw in Danger Mouse. Some may argue that this still isn't big enough for a Saturday HL spot but I'm throwing out possibilities out there.
-Back to Big Boi being there, we still can hold out hope for a long shot for OutKast. But I highly doubt 3stacks is performing with Big Boi anytime soon.
-Kanye. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
-Wu Tang Clan is now becoming a summer favorite at outdoor shows and festivals that transcends genres. However, I still don't think they are a big enough name to carry the torch for Saturday night HL at Bonnaroo X. But it sure would be fun.
-Beyonce could be lumped in with the term "hip-hop". She certainly is a big enough name but probably not up Bonnaroo's alley. She certainly seemed to be having a great time watching her man perform at Bonnaroo last year.
Based on all this information, it looks like the most likely scenario is some kind of Dr. Dre & Friends (Eminem) setup that many of you have been saying for months now. I'm still holding out hope for OutKast but I just don't see it.
There are plenty of music fans in the know here, let's try to work this out and brainstorm.

Okay, first night to be fully honest. I'm waiting on somebody very close to me whose friend is under Death Row/Interscope label. If he responds regarding Dre, then I'll let you know. But don't hold your hopes up thinking I can give you info. I know already I'm going to Hangout fest for free mostly, and hopefully Bonnaroo. And when I mean for free, well, I mean partying rock star status. Jealous yet?
The thing that would make me nervous about signing Eminem, and might make AC hesitant to sign him, is the risk of relapse/rehab. 4 months is a long time to bet on.
That said, no one else appeals to me in hippity hoppity wurld.

Half of the Bonnaroo lineup will either be in the middle of relapse or recovery. It's kind of a rock and roll thing.

Isn't he in Recovery mode now? LOL.
I'm pretty sure AC has booked much more unpredictable acts over the years. Think about it.
I'm putting blind faith in Outkast. Even if it makes no sense at all.
Man, just last week I would have scoffed at that. But I want to be a dreamer and I'll do the same thing. Why not? A lot of reasons. But who cares. OutKast at Roo X!
The problem is not the guy who's using. The problem is the guy who wants to stop, which is what he has declared. Kinda put his name on the line advocating recovery. So if, at any point, he feels his is threatened...everything else is expendable.
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather him than anyone. I just know enough about recovery to be nervous about it. Prolly, as you say, unwarranted.

If Dr. Dre is promoting his album and putting live shows for it...then he's a better chance than Eminem to headline, but not by himself. I suspect it will a group type of thing, because Dre is not bigger than Jay-Z. Not that it matters, but you still want a headliner that provides the extra umph to the lineup to sell tickets. I'll try to let you guys know what's up. This is the only time I might have inside info regarding AC/Superfly, but hopefully that'll change.

In terms of difficulty of locking down the contract, Dre would make sense given how many high profile guests they might want to bring in with him.

I think so too. I should know more before the lineup releases. I'll do my best to find out. Be warned though, the guy I talk to that knows him, likes Bonnaroo, but is not on this forum like I am, so I don't think he gives two rips about what happens as long as it's a good lineup. I'll try my best though.
If it is hip hop rap and not pop that is being considered rap, then we need to look to the (arguably) three biggest record labels right now, and the artists that fall under them:
We could get Young Money. Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Rick Ross (touring, not signed), Tyga, and Mack Maine.
We could get Aftermath. Dr. Dre, Eminem, 50 Cent, Snoop (Has his own record label now, still affiliated with Aftermath artists), Game.
We have already had Roc-A-Fella's two in Kanye and Jay-Z. I think Kanye is unlikely and a "Watch the Throne" with Kanye and Jay seems improbable as well.
If Wayne didn't pan out, then I'm going with Aftermath. I think Eminem could headline on his own, although I think being on top of the bill for the entire festival would be strange, seeing as Jay-Z was listed fourth last year. Dr. Dre, on the other hand, could headline because he would bring with him acts that he works with. Possibly Eminem. Plus, he would be supporting a new album, that features many of those artists.
Outkast or some Goodie Mob deal would be a definite surprise, BEP doesn't make sense and is not really rap, Gorillaz are not even together right now, and no other artists are big enough to hold down a headlining spot.
"I never bought into the Native American mythology. You can smoke a peace pipe 'til your dick falls off, but I'm not dancin' with any fuckin' wolves no matter how high I get. Not that I get high, but if I did, my shit would still believe in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." -kenny powers
TBH, Goodie Mob can't headinline. Neither can Nas, Rick Ross, etc.
If you rule out Jay solo and Beasties, then
Eminem, Outkast, Kanye, Dr. Dre, & BEP as the only realistic possibilities. I could see Beyonce too.
Of those, I can't see Eminem and Dre performing together. It could be one or the other, but Em doesn't really seem like a Bonnaroo type of act and Dre has given no indication he's performing anytime soon.
Outkast? One could hope, but there's a lot of stuff that points otherwise. Big Boi has solo shows scheduled for 2011 and he has stated on numerous ocassions that they won't get back together until Andre does his solo thing.
Kanye? Well, there's the obviously reasons why people would say no chance, but he did help sell out Coachella. Money talks for any festival, really.
Kanye + Jay-Z? A pipe dream, but they'd headline this fest.
^^The only thing about BEP is that supposedly the hold up on the hip/hop act is the contract, and I've never really heard they're that hard a get. I have a hard time seeing how they wouldn't jump at the opportunity to headline Bonnaroo.

Black Eyed Peas can't headline. 5th on the bill at Outside Lands last year, which is smaller than roo, and was when they were riding off of The E.N.D. which was their most popular record ever. Their new record is a commercial disappointment so I don't see how anyone thinks they even remotely make Saturday Night headliner at Bonnaroo. A late night show I could see (I wouldn't see it, but you get the point) but not anywhere close to a headliner.
Kanye won't be there for several reasons. The least controversial is that we won't be sharing that many headliners with Coach.
It's Em/Dre or some form of the two. Or Outkast. Or some random, vaguely "hiphop" act like RATM/Gorillaz/RHCP/etc

The thing to me is, it sounds like this rap act is going to be the Saturday HEADLINER, meaning unopposed. No matter how diverse this fest has gotten, there is just no way that I could picture AC/Superfly having Eminem be the only person on stage on a Saturday night at Bonnaroo. Obviously he has a very large mainstream appeal, but there are a large percentage of people who are strongly anti-Eminem because of his messages, moreso than most other artists.
I feel like if its going to be an unopposed headliner, it has to be an act that has strong appeal and respect well outside of the hip-hop culture -- and Im 100% certain its not the Black Eyed Peas. You guys are really getting crazy if you believe the Black Eyed Peas could ever top the bill at Bonnaroo
I really dont wanna get my hopes up, but I just REALLY cant see it being anyone but OutKast the way insider has made it sound. But at the same time I also REALLY dont think that would happen right now.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.
