The trip started out great, walking around Asheville meeting cool people, drinking great beer, eating great food. We stopped at the Asheville Brewing Company and I had one of the best slices of pizza I've had in the south. We then went to the venue, and were the very first in line waiting, and thus first through the door. We took the same spots we had occupied for the last Volta show I saw, the aforementioned Charlotte show; front and slightly left of center. PERFECT place. Zechs came on, and I will be honest, I knew very little of their work, aside from who was involved. Man, they blew me away... kind of like Volta Lite, but that's not giving them enough credit. It's part post rock, part Volta-esque prog. Marfred and Marcel had some great on stage chemistry, and the blond guitarist (sorry, I don't know his name) had some insane energy. Of course, Marcel was tearing the kit apart, Marfred was killing on the bass (very impressed by this), but what really got my attention was the kid playing keys... he was phenomenal, in my opinion. They played for about 35 or 40 minutes (I didn't look at my clock at any point during the show), and seemed to be having a great time up there.
Then, Volt- ... I mean, ORLG took stage, opening with a version of the Jacob jam I'd never heard, and it also felt it was longer than the videos I've seen from the last week... just incredible stuff. The rest of the set was amazing, too, I wish I could elaborate, but not really knowing song names doesn't help. Only other thing I can really name was a slowed down, moody version of "Broken English" jam, which was really something special. Their dynamics were astounding at this show, everyone seemed to be having a blast, and their playing is probably the best I've seen of them in concert. Omar was animated, dancing all over the stage and doing some really unique stuff with his guitar. Juan seemed stoked, and had great chemistry with Deantoni... solid effort from Juan, as usual. Deantoni was amazing... his restrain and sense of dynamics is a very welcome change of pace from Thomas. He's perfect for these guys. Marcel, I was disappointed I couldn't hear his keys too well. Now, Cedric... this is the best I've seen him perform of the 5 times I've seen Volta/Omar... dude is totally on and talkative, and actually appreciative of the audience. Was great to see this. Set felt like around an 1 hour 45 minutes, but like I said, I didn't look at my clock.
Also, the crowd was pretty cool... way better than the audience at the Civic Center show in 08. However, there was some dude running around selling overpriced acid to people, and it provided some interesting results; this one kid to the very left of the stage was going quacking insane. Some of the funniest Leno I've seen in days (second to the overweight Prince impersonator dancing on Prince's baby grand piano at the Prince show on Monday). Great experience overall, no real complaints from me whatsoever. I've seen them in Asheville and Myrtle Beach in 08, Bonnaroo and Charlotte in 09, and last nights show... of those, Myrtle was clearly the best, but this one is right up there with Bonnaroo 09 as my second favorite Volta related show I've ever seen.
