MODIFIED CLUE: "A cardinal combines fire and ice with friends in high places." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
ACTUAL CLUE: "A cardinal combines fire and ice with friends in _______ places."
This is a fill in the blank clue with the blank being filled with 15 Across from the Feb. 10th edition of the Knoxville News Sentinel.
15 Across: Steakhouse Specification ANSWER: HIGH
EDIT: Added additional info provided by tymonster3
EDIT v0.2: Tweet from Gary
@stef_bo I'm feeling generous though. #Rooclue #10: A cardinal combines fire and ice with friends in high places.

*Will update once I hear it again for the name of the paper or if someone else got it.
This seems easy to me. Ryan Adams & The Cardinals....
Ryan Adams and the Cardinals had a track on Cold Roses (the Japan & UK bonus track) called "So Hot, So Cold". This would be a rare track because it is a bonus track only on the UK and Japan versions.

- Catholic cardinal (usually a bishop or someone just below the pope) - A shade of red - "A short hooded cloak, originally of scarlet cloth, worn by women in the 18th century." - Cardinal numbers - A reference to any number of sports teams
I like the Ryan Adams logic but it seems too easy.

I agree...it seems too easy, but maybe they thought it would be more difficult because it was kinda a double clue with the whole crossword puzzle thing.
Yeah fair enough. The key will be if the online crossword is the same as the print crossword... if not then we're at square one again. Anybody get a hold of the print version of that paper yet to double check?
Something to do with a puzzle? Crossword or jigsaw? Could it possibly be the English band Marillion? Lyrics from Jigsaw: We are jigsaw pieces aligned on the perimeter edge,Intelocked through a missing piece. Also The Rolling Stones have a song called Jigsaw Puzzle. www.marillion.com
When I read it, I see cardinal meaning direction, as in the cardinal directions. A direction that combines fire and ice in rare places. I'm liking the volcano idea, as stated above.
Edit: After a quick search, here is a hot spot in a cold place
Mt. Erebus, the world’s southernmost active volcano, is located on Ross Island, just off the coast of Antarctica in the Ross Sea. Part of the Ring of Fire, Mt. Erebus is located along the boundary of the Scotia and Antarctic tectonic plates.

Probably ruled out, but you could almost get the Red Hot Chili Peppers out of this. Cardinal - Red Combines fire and ice - Hot & Chili Still don't have a tie for the rest though.
So it seems Gary has access to the AC Entertainment twitter, given how his account and it retweet the same information at almost the same time... This is irrelevant, but interesting.

Just have plastic pepper put that together in the roo clues, and bam! You have yourself a hot little mess.

Hmm, this one's a weird clue. Most of the others make it more clear how the answer fits in - "this young palette," "these former kids/nannies," "this ruffian," stuff like that. With this one I have no idea how the wording of it leads to a band/musician, y'know?
The RHCP thinking isn't bad except that the precise wording of the clue doesn't really make sense...plus I think RHCP is pretty unlikely at this point.
Really kinda flummoxed by this one because I don't know if our answer is the cardinal or the rare place or what...
There's a rare earth metal called Ytterby. It's found in the icy land of Sweden. When struck in open air, it ignites to 400 celsius. It's scientific symbol is Y.
The Cardinal is a bird that when combined with the element Y is a byrd.
Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and David Crosby will all be in the midwest this summer...

This was my immediate thought as well. I know they are doing solo stuff but they typically do their solo sets at the same time in the same place. I think they could be a possible answer
