As some of you might be aware I have from time to time espoused the virtues of my misty mate sprayer somebody gifted to me in 2007 @ Roo. Yes they are bad ass and they WORK it keeps your body from getting fried in the sun. Well I do read other things other then this board to survive Bonnaroo. For instance in my quest for better camping information I came upon a sight on Bushcrafting. It has lots of useful info on camping. One of the things I like best is its low-tech approach. A lot of the gear can be built out of junk commonly laying around. Well today I was reading an interesting article on evaporative cooling of food in third world countries. Article here bushcraftusa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28894 there was talk of rafting in the Grand Canyon for a 15 day trip and how the use of a wet piece of burlap would keep ice in the coolers by one of the posters. Easy enough get a thick piece of absorbant fabric and toss over the cooler and it keeps the heat off of your cooler. And everyone at Roo knows how good a cold wet rag to the face feels. Here is also an articlea bout how to construct such a cooling vessel vocademy.com/2010/10/21-year-old-girl-invents-a-super-low-cost-solar-fridge/. Well let us say I have finally figured out the age old tent dilemma that has plagued us for so long. Almost every one of our tents are made out of non-absorbant material meaning that it is water proof. When the sun hits it the heat starts radiating through it very quickly and that is why we climb out all cranky out of tents. What if we got some cheap blankets big pieces of cloth felt etc. and threw them over the tent? This would disrupt the heat radiating through the tent might not last long might be dependent upon type of material thickness etc. Not saying this will work but if anyone is capable of calculating variables involved etc. Would love to hear from you I personally am going to start scouring the thrift stores for things I think will work. When I wake up each morning I will take my cloth go to the troughs get it good an wet and throw it in a garbage bag with some more water on top and let it "marinate" till I come staggering back to camp. Then stretch it over the tent. The tent is waterproof so no drips right your gear remains dry etc. But meanwhile THE SUN HAS TO BOIL OFF THAT WATER BEFORE IT CAN HEAT UP THE TENT!!!. Anyway let me hear the doubters etc. and let us truly use this if we can to help out sleep. An often overlooked but critical part of roo.

Just think about what effect shoving your tent under a canopy has for sleep!! The key is disrupting the sun. This might help some people who just barely made it to Roo and did not have a canopy due to cost etc. Or those of you flying in. Also my canopy is good sized but not big enough to shove my tent under (unless I got greedy and wanted my campmates to sit out in the hot sun while I lounged in luxury). I think this makes a lot of sense.

I like it. I would only be worried about the frame of the tent being able to support the weight of wet material. Like the snow caving in the football stadium roof. But if the article strictly mentions burlap, i think that would be one of the best materials because it is light and isn't tightly sewn, more just knitted loosely. We get oysters in these kinds of sacks and they stay very cool, and the material is very durable.

That is with a fresnel lens wich higly concentrates the suns Insolation(incomming solar rays). Under natural conditions? Also had an epiphany while looking aorund for lightweight cloths that absorb water. This is to keep the weight down on the pole. Kind of like if you are pimp you want your hookers anorexic. I have seen these granules in the gardening section at lowes. You can buy a bag of them by themselves that absorb many times there weight in water. What if you sewed them between two layers of cloth. And slow down the water escape in a more uniform time release manner?

www.stevespanglerscience.com/experiment/00000038 here is the link they are called hydrogel crystals one pound will absorb 35 gallons of water. It would be my hope to sew them into a ring on the edges fo the cloth. Then as the cloth dries it wicks stored water from the crystals like soil. I will keep thinking on this. It would be like an internal reserve of water to reload the material as it dries.

The ring would also distribute the weight on the ground instead of the tent and help weight it down in the event of a big wind. The tent would pretty much weigh normal with the exception of some water migrating towards the top that is being evaporated. The weight would be off of the tent.

Reflection, sometimes we all must reflect on life and ourselves. Reflect the sun away from your tent, your home, or what ever your are camping in and the sun is not absorbed into your structure and you stay cooler. I think if you could some how make a reflective blanket to fit over your tent, you could reflect the sun away. Maybe use those fold up reflectors that go over your dashboard in your car. My idea comes from my hexayurt, instructions here. Just a thought.
I, too, always thought cursedlono might be smarter than he was letting on.
So, I gotta ask lono: that rambling, incoherent style you usually use--is that just a gag for fun? Or is it just how you write when you're excited about something? Because clearly your thoughts are much more organized in this thread.
