Yeah, we were right around the corner from those guys, too, and used them as a landmark.
We were joking at the time how a blow-up love doll was possibly the worst thing to leave unattended at Roo, because you'd always have to worry that you'd come back to your camp in the small hours of the morning only to find some corn-twisted freak in flagrante delicto with her...
Third Year - Turn right at the crazy school bus with a wheelchair on top holding a blow-up doll
I remember these guys!!!
We had a very distinct flag in GA, which was hard to make out at night. However we put a SCUBA emergency beacon on of the pole to guide us home very night.

Buy 30 1/2 inch PVC couplers @ $.24 each Buy 150ft of 1/2 inch PVC pipe @ $1.57 per 10ft section Buy the pipe glue.
Take 13 of the PVC pipes, and cut them in half Take 1 of the PVC pipes and cut 5.5ft off of it (splitting it into 5.5ft and 4.5ft sections) Take 1 of the PVC pipes and cut 4 ft off of it (splitting it into a 6ft and 4ft section) Glue a coupler to (only) one end of each pipe. Assemble the pipes to make 3 slightly longer that 50ft poles. Develop some clever / easy way to bind the 3 50ft poles together in a triangle shape Develop some clever / easy way to attach to the leg of an easy up.
Now you have a strong, durable, wind resistant 50ft tall PORTABLE flag pole
I think I am gonna do mine with some kind of battery operated rope lights or something.
Hate to take the lazy way out, but I just use the gps app on my android.
Heh, yeah....there's a 'find your car' app for the iphone that I think will come in handy for me. If there's any signal, that is. Barring that I'm bringing a flagpole and a huge City of Pittsburgh flag and some battery powered lights for on top of my van.
We used a 12 ft. PVC flagpole that we mounted on the top of my SUV rack, which gives you about another 6 ft. of height. The flagpole was in three sections, and each section was a different pipe width, with the widest being at the bottom. This way, we were able to fit all of the pieces inside each other (like a telescope?) to bring it in easily. We also duct taped two solar powered LED garden lights to the top of it (they're like $10-$15), which was clutch when we were making our way back to camp at night. It was our beacon of hope
last year I followed the advice of many people, I made a flag and brought. Well lots of my neighbors brought hugh flags and flagpoles so I didnt bother to put mine up. The first night, the tallest flag was stolen and pole was torn down (but not broken) so one neighbor gave another their flag to hoist 35+ft in the air (awesome by the way, easy to find) I relied on that some, but mainly on of those humming light generators and a row of port-a-johns, along with a couple of cars and tents that were roadside. I will say there were many times where I may have circled my camp before finding it
+1 PVC flag pole FTW. There's no cheaper way to put something that high up that will last all weekend. I bought two 10' sections of PVC pipe that fit inside one another, and I bolted them together with 8" of overlap with Wal-Mart hardware. I zip tied the entire thing to an EZ Up leg, and I zip tied a bright orange Clemson flag to the top. It made finding camp during the day a breeze, and I think I'm going to steal the solar garden light idea for next year!

LOL No worries, I'm not the Leafs fan. I give her hell for it too and since now she's living right across the river from Detroit, she just needs to give in.

fawnmart, that flag is AWESOME!!!!! Nice job!
I just ordered this on eBay, as I found out that official City flags run on the expensive side... I got some solar lights to go with it too, thanks to the person who recommended that!

Thanks for the reassurance all. I took my first baby steps with El Wire and an air brush at the same time. Lots of fun but still need lots of practice. 39 days.. Woohoo!
IF ALL ELSE FAILS - carry your car keys and when you think you are close, hit the "alarm" button. I had to do this after Kanye was late by about 13 hours a few years ago and my partner (who was sleeping) almost had a thrombo. But.... I found my way back!
Oh man that would piss me off if I was right next to you snoozing. I second having a heart attack or at least pooing my pants. But, at least you found your spot!
Last year we just looked for our POD balloon--white with a green cross. But then it became a debate with our party. Was is a green balloon with a white cross, or a white balloon with a green cross?
I bought a bushnell backtrack digital compass thing. It has GPS in it and can mark and save up to 3 locations. You can't tell it where you want to go like a normal GPS but you just mark your camp and whatever else you want to remember how to get to and it gives you an arrow and how many yards/meters left to go. We plan on marking the camp and where we are when we're in the masses so when somebody has to go to the bathroom or whatever they can mark where we are so it's easier to get back.
Being a first time attendee, I was looking for some answers which this thread seems to have largely answered. One question ... can you find/see flags in the campground easily enough at night?
I have an Australian flag that I can hoist. A friend gave it to me for what I thought was a strange going away present. I wondered what the hell I was ever going to do with it. Maybe I can put it to good use. Scantily dressed ladies will be sure to come bounding across the campgrounds to seek out my Australian flagpole.
