Great links dreamingtree. There was another from last year which summed it up; "is this a vacation or an endurance test?". VIP is the former, GA the latter the four years I've been. WHile $700 is indeed steep, another way to look at it is: for $100 bucks a day on top of the $250 I'm paying, wouldn't I want access to my own cold beers (with limited return searches), clean showers, e-z access (to venue itself and Centeroo), more camping space blah blah blah. That being said, I'm 50 now and certainly remember when money was tighter for a younger me.

Ditto here. I don't like walking a mile in the hot TN sun for any band.
It depends on where you live. If you live close enough that you can catch the majority of the acts you want to see for less than $700+travel expenses then you have no reason to go VIP unless you HAVE to be at Bonnaroo and can't take GA. First, the VIP views are not anywhere near as good as you would get paying for a ticket in a regular venue, so don't even consider this a factor in your purchase. What you are really paying is $450 for creature comforts you would normally have at home (AC/Hot shower/Clean bathrooms), but to a lesser extent. You get these at home, why pay $450 extra?
If you can see the acts you want to see at home, then why blow that much money? Honestly, very rarely does a Bonnaroo set blow other sets on a tour out of the water. Often the collaborations are gimmicky (See Phish with Springsteen). What Bonnaroo should be about is seeing once in a lifetime acts, or the ability to see a bunch of acts you wouldn't otherwise be able to see. If those acts make it worth your while to blow a grand (which is what it will really set you back when its all said and done) for the weekend then by all means buy the VIP pass.
Otherwise consider the GA ticket (if you can stand the shit-stew portapotties and long walks.)

Arguably you're trying to escape a large part of the Bonnaroo vibe by going VIP. Really I don't know what this vibe you're talking about is. It's probably very subjective ;-p.
